Sensex crosses 16,900-mark in two-way trade

Mumbai, Sept. 25 (PTI): The benchmark Sensex crossed the 16,900-mark in morning deals today on alternate bouts of buying and selling, ahead of expiry of September contract on Thursday.

The BSE 30-share Sensex resumed slightly better at 16,890.75 and immediately dipped to a low of 16,811.00 on weak global cues.

But emergence of buying and short-coverings at lower levels ahead of the expiry of September series on Thursday pulled it back to a high of 16,915.91 before being quoted at 16,826.97 at 1030 hrs, a mere fall of 18.86 points over yesterday's close of 16,845.83.

The broad-based S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also moved in a range of 4,953.90, a new intra-day peak, and 4,915.00 before quoting at 4,920.95 at 1030 hrs from previous close of 4,932.20, a decline of 11.25 points.

Realty and capital goods counters attracted fresh profit -booking at higher levels.

Top heavyweight and gainer in the current rally Reliance Industries (RIL) also fell on selling.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), the main driving force behind current rally, remained heavy buyers after US rate cuts on September 18. They picked up shares worth 6,228.83 crore since September 19, including overnight provisional figures of Rs 1,190.53 crore.

Meanwhile, most of the Asian indices were trading in negative terrain following feeble trend on Wall Street yesterday.

Anand increases lead to one point

NEW DELHI: A smart, short draw with Levon Aronian saw Viswanathan Anand double his lead to one point after nearest challenger Boris Gelfand and defending champion Vladmir Kramnik crashed to defeats in a sensational ninth round action of the World chess championship in Mexico City on Sunday.

Soon after the action began following a day’s rest, Anand settled for a comfortable 21-move draw against Aronian in Ruy Lopez to reach six points.

After a series of theoretical moves, the players decided to sign truce. Over the next couple of hours, the defeats of two previously unbeaten challengers helped Anand’s cause.

In fact, it left Anand as the only undefeated player in the eight-player field.

In the crucial 10th round, Kramnik plays white against Anand in what is seen to be the Russian’s last chance to keep alive chances of defending the title.

The results:

Ninth round: Viswanathan Anand (6) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 4); Alexander Grischuk (Rus, 4.5) bt Boris Gelfand (Isr, 5); Alexander Morozevich (Rus, 4) bt Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 4.5); Peter Leko (Hun, 4.5) drew with Peter Svidler (Rus, 3.5).
10th round pairings: Kramnik-Anand; Gelfand-Leko; Aronian-Grischuk; Svidler-Morozevich.

Team India: Champion of Champions

Sept. 24 — Cricket, always more allegory than sport in this country, is very often the screen on which India’s anxieties and aspirations are projected. That is why the Indian cricket team’s victory over Pakistan on Monday in a new lean, swift version of the elegant old game came to signify something far larger than itself.

Not only was the game different, but the team was unlike those past. Its members played fast and furious. They danced victoriously on the cricket pitch. At news conferences, they spoke Hinglish, a mongrel of Hindi and English that has become the lingua franca of the young small-town Indian.

The captain, a long-haired 26-year-old wicketkeeper named Mahendra Singh Dhoni, boldly told his teammates to shake off the burden of history, and they did.

Fans and pundits seized on the team’s success in the first tournament of Twenty20, a radically compressed new cricket format, to celebrate the ascendance of a brash and confident new generation, rising from far-flung small-town India, free of pedigree and custom.

“The young and the restless,” is how Rajdeep Sardesai, the son of a professional cricketer and editor in chief of CNN-IBN, a news channel, described the new face of Indian cricket.

One of its gifts to the nation, he and other cricket watchers say, is to present, for the first time, a powerfully athletic presence on the pitch. Athleticism has never been associated with Indian cricket, nor with Indians in general, and that has been a chip on the shoulder of Indian manhood.
Indian cricket’s new face — and physique — emerged in the inaugural world tournament of Twenty20, which ended Monday in Johannesburg.

Where gentleman players once distinguished them selves in white trousers and knit vests, Twenty20 was accompanied by cheerleaders wearing what resembled sports bras.

Restraint was out. Music was in. The games, 27 in all, involving 12 countries, each took about three hours, in sharp contrast to the customary five-day test match.

Think of Twenty20 as cricket on Red Bull. Or as the historian Mukul Kesavan put it, “kamikaze cricket.”

“The whole point is to go for it, and keep going for it,” said Mr. Kesavan, whose history of Indian cricket, “Men in White,” was published this year. “The emphasis is as much on athleticism as skill, and where, therefore, there’s a premium on youth and fitness and abandon.”

The final paired India against its old rival and brought out a display of not only wild abandon but also patriotism, with flags flying in the sunshine and many offices in both India and Pakistan clearing out unusually early; the match was broadcast in the evening here.

The average age on the 11-man Indian lineup was about 23, and on the Pakistani team just under 25. That reflected two disproportionately young nations: the median age in India is about 24, and in Pakistan, 19.

Not least, Twenty20 served to redeem cricket in both countries, after the humiliation and scandal that the teams suffered in April at the Cricket World Cup in Jamaica. In that tournament, India was trounced by its neighbor Bangladesh. The Pakistani team faced the death of its coach, Bob Woolmer.

Redemption, along with the new demographics, promised to breathe new life into cricket, already a big business. A 10-second television spot during a match easily goes for $10,000 in this country, and Twenty20 matches broadcast here have been spliced with advertisements unabashedly chasing the youth market. “Next-generation cricket, next-generation bike,” went one advertisement for an Indian-made motorcycle.

“Sponsors will drool,” said Ayaz Memon, an editor at DNA, a Mumbai newspaper. “The game has found favor across age groups, and more significantly across genders. It could even emerge as a potent challenge to Bollywood, because it lasts just about three and half hours, provides wholesome entertainment and is a reality show.”

What’s more, Twenty20 stands to substantially raise the value of the team’s younger and newly ascendant players; cricketers are already some of the best-paid mascots in this country, for things as varied as motor oil and cellphone service.

It was impossible for the cricket-watching audience, which today excludes very few Indians, not to seize on the metaphors that Twenty20 offers for the changes sweeping the country, like the rise of small-town working class India and the fading of the old cricket decorum itself.

Much was made of the fact that the captain, Mr. Dhoni, grew up in an uncelebrated eastern city called Ranchi. The batsman S. Sreesanth, it was said, defied cricket manners by being unusually aggressive. The bowler Joginder Sharma was celebrated as the son of a small shopkeeper who could afford to buy no more than a cloth ball for his son.

In the end, the swagger of youth seemed to matter as much as simple serendipity. Near the end of the close and tension-filled game, India beat Pakistan by five runs. Minutes later, apparently in a moment of abandon, Mr. Dhoni took off his jersey, gave it to a young fan and marched topless before the crowd.

Fireworks erupted over the Indian capital.

Govt bans channel for fake sting operation

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The government banned a TV news channel for a month on Thursday after it aired a misleading sting operation in which it accused a Delhi teacher of blackmailing her students into becoming prostitutes.

Live India showed hidden camera footage and an anonymous interview with a supposed victim last month, accusing the teacher of drugging her students and making pornographic images of them.

Police have since arrested Prakash Singh, the journalist behind the report, and the woman who posed as a victim in the video, who police said was an aspiring journalist. They have been charged with cheating, fabricating false evidence and conspiracy.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has now banned Live India for a month, saying it had slandered someone without checking facts and had incited violence. The channel's editor previously told local media that Singh had deceived him.

The scandal may have given the ministry extra ammunition as it tries to pass a controversial new broadcasting bill, which would permit sting operations only in the public interest.

Critics say the bill is draconian and gives sweeping powers to the government to censor the media.

Resounding welcome for Sunita in ancestral home

Sept. 20: “Borders are only in the mind, I thank Gandhi for teaching me this lesson. If all the people follow this message, the world will be a much better place. It is the only hope for this world,” wrote astronaut Sunita Williams in the Visitor's Book today at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.

Williams (42), daughter of an Indian father and an American mother, was given a hero's welcome earlier on arrival at the airport. Hundreds of schoolchildren gathered for a glimpse of her, while her family members looked on happily. She is on a six-day visit.

In the evening, she was welcomed by many Congress leaders at the ashram, including Mr Arjun Modhvadia, leader of the Opposition in the assembly and Mr Bharat Solanki, state party president.

Williams spoke briefly and her words were translated into Gujarati for the audience's benefit. She said: "When I was up there in space, the earth looked beautiful, particularly India. There were red, green and purple colours and even the craters in the earth looked beautiful. India looked like a different planet."

Later, Williams told a crowd of children: "Countries are not differentiated by borders when one looks from space. There are no hurdles to what one can do, they exist only in the mind ~ if you set your mind to do anything, you can achieve it." The journey from earth to space was 400 km. She also talked about saving the environment.

“We have to make a conscious effort to save the environment," she stressed, adding: "Gandhi knew about these basic things without going to space. I am proud to be one of his students." Williams was presented many mementos during her visit. She spent about an hour at the ashram.

Rohit Sharma comes good after long wait

Durban, Sept. 21 (PTI): Rohit Sharma had to endure a long wait to play a significant innings for India, but his effort against South Africa in the Twenty20 World Cup gave a glimpse of his talent and character, which should stand him in good stead for India in the future.

His half-century off 40 balls in the must-win game at Kingsmead, completed with a six off the last ball of the innings, propelled India to a fighting score of 153 and an eventual 37-run victory for a spot in the semifinals.

Rohit batted with great maturity and poise in alien conditions and, along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, extricated India from a perilous situation of 61 for four. They put on an invaluable 88-run partnership that helped India reach a respectable total.

"There was a bit of nerves, the team was under pressure because we had lost some early wickets. I had a good partnership with 'Mahi' which helped us get a good competitive total. I hope to carry on in the next few games," Rohit, who who made his international Twenty20 debut in the previous match against England, said.

He did not get a chance to bat in that game. But when he finally got the opportunity, he grabbed it with both hands.

Despite being a member of the squad, Rohit did not get many opportunities on the tour of England. But being around the seniors helped him a great deal.

"Even though I did not get to play any matches in England, it was a great experience just being with the team."

His effort yesterday came under trying circumstances.

"The pitch was not easy to bat on. It was seaming a bit, so I decided not to play my shots initially. I just tried to bat normally."

His skipper also had a word of praise for the young Mumbai batsman.

"It was amazing the way he batted," said Dhoni. "It is really tough for a guy who has been sitting out for a long time."

South African captain Graeme Smith too lauded the 20-year-old's effort.

"He batted superbly, he stuck to his gameplan and finished the innings very well. The last-ball six proved more expensive than we thought and his partnership with Dhoni was very important for India."

MTV to launch own social networking site

MTV Debuts Online Community

Extending its image as a youthful brand, MTV has reportedly launched its first online community christened Think.MTV.com.

Targeted at the young and the restless, the Think Community aims to be a definitive online resource, a place where everyone from sunny day volunteers to die hard activists can: "Get Educated, Get Connected, Get Heard, Get Active, and Get Rewarded".

The online community will serve as a platform for youth activism with respect to personal issues such as sexual health, discrimination, and education, as well as global concerns including terrorism, poverty, the denigration of environment, etc.

Members will be encouraged to make use of advanced communication tools like mobile phones, broadband videos, digital cameras, and online forums. MTV believes this will help the youth to get up and take a stance on some of the issues close to their heart.

Think.MTV.com will feature user-uploaded multimedia content served-up as videos, blogs, video games, podcasts, news reports, and so on.

Significantly, members who use the Web site to do some good will be rewarded with opportunities- to meet stars, access exclusive MTV events, get exposure on MTV, and receive grants/scholarships and more.

Members will also be able to carry their profiles and those of their friends to any of the sites in MTV Networks' recently announced Flux Network, which is an open platform enabling Web sites and bloggers add community tools to their sites.

So far, the Think community has managed to rope-in a couple of stars, non-profits, and civic organizations to join forces with the youth so as to address a wide range of social issues.

Some big names include: the UN, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the President's Volunteer Service Award, as well as celebrities like Bono, Reggie Bush, Pete Wentz, Shakira, Nick Cannon, Rosario Dawson, John Legend, Steve Nash, and Jeff Sachs.

Think.MTV.com, currently launched as beta, is financially backed by several partners including the Case Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Goldhirsh Foundation, and the MCJ Amelior Foundation.

NBC to offer free downloads of TV shows under VoD

Beginning this October, NBC.com will allow full episodes of their hit shows to be downloaded to viewers’ desktops, with a new service called “NBC Direct”, according to Coming Soon. Each episode will be available for one week and will be available on Windows-based PCs. The quality of these videos will also be significantly better than regular streaming video.

The following shows will be part of NBC Direct: Heroes, The Office, Life, Bionic Woman, 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Eventually, users will be able to pre-select which shows they want to download. This will work pretty much the same way a DVR season pass would work. As soon as they are available, whatever show users select to subscribe to will automatically be downloaded to their computer. In addition to that, in the coming months, look for versions of NBC Direct to be available on Macs, as well as portable devices.

NBC.com also plans to bring out enhanced versions of NBC Direct that will present the shows in high definition. Finally, other paid business models will be offered in which users can multiple options to view their favorite shows (including download-to-own, rental, and subscription).

This is all well and good, but it really doesn’t seem to be too much different than what is currently being offered on NBC.com. They have several full-episode shows available to watch on their Web site. Whether a show gets downloaded to my PC or I have to go to the show’s site to watch the episode really doesn’t make much of a difference to me. What does everyone else think?

Vodafone brand makes India debut

Hutch is Now Vodafone

EW DELHI ( Leading global mobile provider Vodafone began using its own name across India following its purchase of an Indian cellular firm, rolling out what the British company said was one of the world's biggest re branding campaigns.

The firm's media saturation blitz follows its purchase in March of a majority stake in Hutchison Essar from Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecommunications International for 11.1 billion dollars.

The purchase is seen as crucial to the British company's earnings growth as it struggles with saturated cellular markets in the developed world.

India is the world's fastest growing cellular market, adding more than six million subscribers a month.

"We think the brand change is the largest seen in this country and we think it could be said to be as big as has ever been done globally," Harit Nagpal, a senior official of the Indian unit, told AFP.

He declined to comment on the cost of the campaign but media reports put it at several million dollars.

Vodafone tied up with Rupert Murdoch's Star TV network to launch a 24-hour nationwide brand-awareness campaign.

Vodafone has said it wants to make Hutch the number-one mobile provider in India by 2010. Hutch has already moved up to third from fourth place since being acquired, overtaking state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).

Vodafone has said its focus would be on rural markets and media reports said it has have tied up with Chinese handset maker ZTE for low-cost handsets.

So far India's "mobile revolution" has been mainly confined to the cities, but analysts say the real prize are vast rural areas, where nearly 70 percent of India's 1.1 billion population live.

Dollar = 39.91 Rupees - Falling dollar puts Indian exports in trouble

21-Sep-2007 / National
Rupee has breached the physicological barrier of 40 against the dollar to close at 39.91 on Thursday in its march upwards.

The Indian Rupee is at a 9 year high against the US Dollar. In fact, dollar has lost to other currencies also including the Pound and the Euro after the US Feds announced a cut of 50 basis points for fund rates and discount rates.

The depreciation of the dollar after the US Federal rate cut is making the Indian exporters run to the government for help. Already facing the appreciating rupee for the past year, Indian exporters are likely to be badly affected by the sudden jump in the rupee.

The rupee has gained substantially from its lowest of 49.07 in 2002 and experts are saying that it will rise will continue in coming times.

It remains to be seen how our Reserve Bank manages its balancing act. On one side pressure is mounting on it to cut interest rates, whereas on the other hand it may have to increase the cash reserve ratio (CRR) to handle the inflow of dollars which is expected to come into the country post the US Fed rate cuts.

As the exporters are running for help, the import-intensive industries must be happy with the prospect of cheaper imports.

Firefox Won't Save You from IE Flaws

Users running Firefox are vulnerable to IE flaws via files supported by Windows Media Player, a researcher shows.

Running Firefox or Opera as a default browser won't save you from unpatched Internet Explorer vulnerabilities—a fact made explicit when a researcher showed how easy it is to put HTML inside files supported by Windows Media Player.

Researcher Petko D. Petkov said in a Sept. 18 blog posting that he's found that a fully patched Windows XP Service Pack 2 system running Internet Explorer 6 or 7 along with Windows Media Player 9—the default, although the media player is now up to Version 11—will open any page of an attacker's choice even if the default browser is not Internet Explorer.

The broader implication is that even users who think they're safe because they don't run IE are exposed to any IE vulnerabilities out there, Petkov said. This is true not only for Windows Media Player users but also for those who run Skype, GTalk and AIM, given that those applications all use IE for rendering incoming and outgoing messages, he told eWEEK in an e-mail. "Many users don't realize that they are running IE most of the time, although their default browser is Firefox, Opera, Safari or whatever it might be," he said. The preferred browser for Windows Media Files is also IE, given Microsoft's proprietary formats, he said.

"Therefore, a movie running in Windows Media Player will use no other browser but IE itself, regardless of your settings," he said. In other words, running a fully patched version of Firefox with an unpatched version of IE is just as big a security gamble as running unpatched Firefox.

He gave this example: Firefox opens a security confirmation box when the attacker wants to launch an application through a URL handler. IE does not. However, attackers can force a page to open in IE, thereby opening an external application and enabling them to launch an attack such as a Second Life exploit he described earlier the week of Sept 17. Such an attack can be embedded inside a Windows Media Player meta file, he said.

"Even if you are a Firefox user, the attack will work. Of course you have to open the meta file first."Petkov said the vulnerability can be used in some "very, very interesting" phishing attacks. He himself prepared a simple proof of concept that spawns a window in full-screen mode, noting that it would be simple to fake a Windows log-out/log-in sequence to phish credentials from victims.

Petkov has been on a roll lately when it comes to the hidden dangers he sees in so-called "media meta files." One such media meta file is QTL, the format that was exploited in a recent QuickTime vulnerability he discovered.

(Mozilla fixed the QuickTime vulnerability in Firefox on Sept. 18, but Apple has yet to fix the primary QuickTime flaw.) Other media meta files include ASX, a format that he's working to bring attention to now, saying that problems "could easily emerge" with the format.

Petkov told eWEEK that the best way to protect a system from the Windows Media Player vulnerability is to upgrade to Windows Media Player 10 or 11.

Channel Insider,

Yuvraj powers India to a huge total

BLAZING KNOCK: With India in a must-win situation, Yuvraj Singh chose his moment perfectly. He became the first batsman in Twenty20 history to belt six sixes in a single over, the 19th of the innings from England's medium-pacer Stuart Broad. In the process, he also scored the fastest 50 in Twenty20 history to take India to 218 for four.

Durban: There is perverse humour in being clobbered for six sixes in an over. Stuart Broad had gone past anger, despair, disbelief and wryness, as Yuvraj Singh cleared the ropes six times out of six, in the 19th over of the Indian innings against England in the crucial Twenty20 super-eight match on Wednesday. He even managed the fastest fifty in any form of the game, scoring his 50 off 12 balls.

The left-hander struck the sixes across all parts of the ground. There was a flick off the legs, a thwack over extra-cover, a full-toss despatched over backward point and one that was packed off to the food stalls outside the stands. The crowds went berserk.

India had gotten off to a great start thanks to Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, with the duo putting on 136 for the first wicket. Sehwag had a slice of luck when Collingwood came in to bowl, and was dropped by Dimitri Mascarenhas after the latter’s futile run behind the ’keeper.

Quiet beginning

The Indian innings began with quiet dignity. No dirty slogs or madcap scoops. But the burst of activity that began sometime after the fifth over proved extremely productive for India.

Sehwag’s sixes over third man were a delight and so was the manoeuvred one over backward point while Gambhir’s slogs and slashes were the most fruitful.

“We wanted to see off the first five overs and then build the innings,” said Sehwag during the innings break.

Sehwag’s move to the off-stump to a Tremlett delivery proved costly, as the stumps went crashing. Gambhir continued improvising with his shots-making, but played one scoop-to-fine-leg too many and found Broad off Maddy. Robin Uthappa was embarrassingly, bowled.

But it was too little too late for England, as the openers had already done the damage.

India had replaced Ajit Agarkar and Dinesh Karthik with Rohit Sharma and Joginder Sharma.

scoreboard India: G. Gambhir c Broad b Maddy 58, V. Sehwag b Tremlett 68, R. Uthappa b Tremlett 6, M.S. Dhoni (not out) 10, Yuvraj Singh c Collingwood b Flintoff 58, I. Pathan (not out) 0, Extras (lb-7, w-10, nb-1) 18; Total (for four in 20 overs) 218.

Fall of wickets: 1-136, 2-144, 3-155, 4-216.

England bowling: Anderson 4-0-25-0, Broad 4-0-60-0, Flintoff 4-0-33-1, Mascarenhas 1-0-15-0, Tremlett 4-0-45-2, Collingwood 1-0-13-0, Maddy 2-0-20-1.

Sania got the Bollywood look

Sania got the Bollywood look

Tennis star and pin-up girl Sania Mirza has a second career in movies, say filmmakers and trade pundits Sania Mirza, God’s gift to Indian tennis, is known for her own brand of sex appeal and oomph both on and off the court.

Bollywood, which has made her its favourite sports pin-up girl, has flirted with the idea of pulling her into movies. The topic came up last week again when Sania shared a stage with Shah Rukh Khan. SRK, himself, was not averse to the idea of the Hyderabadi stunner appearing onscreen. LT spoke to some Bollywood filmmakers and trade analysts to find out whether Sania could be the queen of the larger masses.

Subhash Ghai

Sania looks good, she has a great physique, face, and very expressive eyes. But most importantly, she has the fighting spirit. These are very impressive qualities. Some day, I would like to cast her in a movie.

The genre of movies keeps changing here. If and when she decides to join the industry, who knows, we may have high-skilled action movies then.

She will look good in them. I would like to make an action movie and cast her as a young, retired sportperson.

Farah Khan

I think her new look is quite nice. She is young and can experiment with her looks. Sania has a lot of potential to be a heroine. She is good looking, sexy, but frankly we need her more as a sports icon. She is unique in her field. I would probably cast her in a traditional Indian role. She has a great Indian face and features.

Vikram Bhatt

She has immense crowd-pulling ability and a huge presence among people, thanks to her achievements in tennis. I can’t say how well she will prove to be as an actress.

If she has the desire, no doubt she will get her first film, but to sustain herself in the industry, she will have to train herself and give the required auditions. Other sports persons have become actors but unfortunately couldn’t leave their mark. If I have to cast Sania, then it will be in the role of a tennis star. She has the charisma to carry it off!

Taran Adarsh

I prefer Sania's old look, it suited her better. She is pretty, hot and charismatic and she has everything going for her to become an actress. To top it, she has the aura of a young and powerful woman. She commands that interest. She is made of such stuff that you give her a second look. If she joins Bollywood, she will be the perfect foil to Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. There’s no doubt that she’ll be an instant hit.

Amod Mehra

Her new look makes her look younger, which doesn’t make sense as she is already young. Sania has the star power to draw in the public. She’s pretty, charismatic, good looking and most importantly, has very expressive eyes — a prime requisite to make a mark as an actress. Sania is blessed with everything.

She will really look good with Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. Our industry needs fresher and younger actresses. The slot for a young, successful actress is empty.

Kunal Kohli

Her new look definitely suits her. She has the looks and personality to get into movies and judging by her ads, she looks comfortable in front of the camera too. It would be interesting to work with a newcomer who’s a star in another field. I would like to cast her in a nice romantic role.

Aparna Sen

I don’t know whether she can become a good actress, but why do we need her to come to movies? She is doing pretty well in tennis, and as a sports icon, she draws immense love and respect. Let her be there. Everyone need not be a movie star.

Google AdSense for Mobile

Google AdSense for Mobile

September 18, 2007
Recently I wrote that Google Mobile was starting to run AdWords ads. This initiative has been expanded to now include Google Adsense(TM) for mobile. This program contextually targets ads to mobile website content.

The program is targeted at people who have created websites targeted at mobile browsers, allowing them to make money on contextual advertising using the same model used by Google on the traditional web. The program is available in the following countries: US, Australia, China, England, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, and will soon also be available in Japan.

For AdWords advertisers that currently do contetual advertising with Google, this will expand the reach of that advertising further onto the mobile platform.

A word of caution is in order for all Google AdWords advertisers.

Participation in this program defaults to opt-in. If your content is not appropriate for a mobile environment, you need to go into your AdWords account and manually opt-out.

I have heard some criticism of this policy, as many AdWords account holders will not know that they need to do this, and their ads will be running in a mobile environment, even if that is not what they want. This will result in added expenditure that they will not have anticipated.

The Google FAQ page for the AdWords for Google Mobile initiative states that the procedure to opt out is:

You can opt out your eligible search ads from running on Google Mobile Search pages at any time. On the Campaign Summary page, select the link that says 'View performance data for these ads' from within the alert message or below the table that contains your campaigns. On the bottom of the page that reads "Performance Data: Search Ads on Google Mobile Search," click on the link that says 'Yes, opt me out' to stop running your search ads.

It appears that the procedure is a bit different than that. I went into an AdWords account this morning, and could not find the link Google refers to on the Campaign Summary tab. After about 10 minutes, I finally found the following text: "There are 61 days left before we will begin charging for search ads on Google Mobile Search. View details". Dhoni named captain of India's ODI team

Dhoni named captain of India's ODI team

Mumbai, Sept. 18 :

Wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni was today appointed captain of India's one-day team less than three years after making his international debut, but the national selectors were unable to decide on the Test captain.

The 26-year-old Dhoni, a dashing batsman whose wicket-keeping needs to improve, was recently named the captain of the Twenty20 team currently participating in the World Cup in South Africa and he has been promoted to lead the national team in the ODI series against Australia and Pakistan this year.

The national selection committee, which met here today in the wake of Rahul Dravid's sudden resignation from Test and ODI captaincy did not appoint anybody to lead the Test team although there was widespread speculation that Sachin Tendulkar would take over the reins of the Test team.

"We did not offer captaincy to anyone, neither did we talk to Tendulkar regarding Test captaincy," Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar said.

The selectors also brought back paceman Irfan Pathan and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in the 15-member squad for the first three one-dayers against Australia beginning from September 29.

Paceman Ajit Agarkar and Munaf Patel, both of whom have been quite inconsistent, have been dropped from the squad announced by BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah.

"Dhoni is a good captain and has done well in the Twenty20 World Cup. We will see how he performs in these 12 ODIs before choosing the Test captain (against Pakistan)" Vengsarkar said.
The Jharkhand player will have three former captains, including his immediate predecessor Dravid, playing under him in the first three ODIs against Australia at Bangalore, Kochi and Hyderabad.

The squad, which will have Yuvraj Singh as vice captain, has no place for hard-hitting batsman Virender Sehwag, while Rohit Sharma has also been omitted.

Dispelling any notion that the captaincy was offered to Tendulkar, Vengsarkar said "We discussed four or five players and then came to the conclusion that Dhoni is the best choice, the best man at the moment."

About Dravid's decision to quit the high-profile job without any advance communication to the selectors, Vengsarkar said, "We did not expect him to quit. We discussed the pros and cons (of the development) and arrived at the conclusion (of naming Dhoni as captain)".

The chief selector did not agree with the view that Dhoni will be overburdened by the captaincy.
"I don't think he will be overburdened. He's young and can handle it," he said.

Vengsarkar said that though Sehwag has not been recalled like Pathan and Harbhajan, he will get a chance later.

"We will be rotating the players. Irfan and Harbhajan have done well in Twenty20 Cup. We need an all rounder in the 7 or 8 position and Irfan gives us more options," he said.

On Munaf's exclusion, Vengsarkar said, "Munaf stands a chance but he has to prove his fitness."
The chief selector also dismissed the notion that having three former captains would make it difficult for Dhoni to lead the side.

"I don't think so. The three former captains will give him full support. You are talking about having three captains and (Mohd) Azharuddin had five former captains under him when he led India in the 1990s," Vengsarkar said.

BCCI secretary and meeting convener Shah said that the selectors had discussed with colleague V Raju, who is in South Africa with the Twenty20 World Cup team, and Dhoni while choosing the squad for the first three ODIs.

"They had a teleconference with Raju and Dhoni," Shah said.

Shah said there was nothing wrong in Dravid intimating the BCCI president (Sharad Pawar) and not Vengsarkar about his decision to relinquish captaincy.

"Generally when players retire they inform the president only. Senior players like Rahul know what he's doing," he added.

There were no surprises in the 15-member squad and the omission of Agarkar and Patel was very much on the cards for their indifferent performance during the ODI series against England.
The injury-prone Munaf did not seem to have recovered fully from the injury while Agarkar proved to be much too costly despite being in international cricket for close to ten years.

Pathan, who had played his last ODI against the West Indies in January this year, forced his way back in the national team for his impressive showing in the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup.
Harbhajan Singh was also rewarded for his decent performance in English county cricket and also in the Twenty20 World Cup.

The Australians are slated to arrive on September 25 and the ODIs are scheduled on September 29 (Bangalore), October 2 (Kochi), October 5 (Hyderabad), October 8 (Mohali), October 11 (Vadodara), October 14 (Nagpur) and October 17 (Mumbai, Wankhede).

They will play a one-off Twenty20 tie against hosts India at the Cricket Club of India here on October 20.

The five ODIs against Pakistan are scheduled on November 5 (Guwahati), 8 (Mohali), 12 (Kanpur), 15 (Gwalior) and 18 (Jaipur).

Indian team for first three ODIs against Australia: M S Dhoni (capt), Yuvraj Singh (vice-captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Dinesh Kaarthick, Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Irfan Pathan, Romesh Pawar, Piyush Chawla, R P Singh, Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh.

Yahoo Begins Testing New Social Networking Service

World, get ready for Yahoo Mash

Yahoo recently began beta testing Mash, the company's experimental social networking web site that will allow Yahoo users to share information with one another.

Mash is Yahoo's latest attempt at social networking after failing with Yahoo 360 and its bid to purchase Facebook.

Yahoo aims to implement features that will differentiate Mash from other services, but exact details remain unknown.

One perk already known is the ability for users to edit profiles that belong to their friends.Yahoo started inviting a small number of testers to the service late last week.

Users who have not been invited to the service are unable to view the site, however; the head of the Mash team has a public blog which details the current status of the project.

For any DailyTech readers who are now Mash users, the head of the Mash development team, Will Aldrich, has a message for you.

"Mash is still pretty raw — there are bugs and we haven’t gotten to several of the features it really should have," he posted in the blog.

We need to hear from you about where to focus our efforts. So leave comments here in the blog, on my profile, or on Mash’s suggestions board.

We’re listening."A New York Times blog points out a number of different features that the early version of Mash does not utilize.

For example, private messaging for users to message other users has not been activated by Yahoo. Users also do not have the ability to post information and personal details.

EU Court slaps hefty fines on Microsoft

Luxembourg, September 17, 2007.

In a landmark ruling with key implications for European Union (EU) competition policy, a court in Luxembourg on Monday backed the bloc's decision to inflict a multi-million-euro fine on Microsoft for abusing its dominant position in the software market.

With a sentence read out in a packed court by presiding judge Bo Vesterdorf, the EU's Court of First Instance overturned almost the entire content of Microsoft's appeal against a 2004 ruling by the European Commission (EC).

The court judged that the bloc's executive arm had been right in imposing a 497-million-euro ($689 million) fine - later raised by an additional 280.5 million euros - on Microsoft.

The court also backed its order that Microsoft must give rivals access to some of its codes and sell a "light" version of its Windows operating system, stripped of its media player.
In a statement issued in Brussels, the EC welcomed the ruling.

"This judgement confirms the objectivity and the credibility of the Commission's competition policy. This policy protects the European consumer interest and ensures fair competition between businesses in the internal market," said Jose Manuel Barroso, the Commission president.

Georg Greve, president of the Free Software Foundation Europe, called it "a screaming victory for Europe", while Microsoft's chief defence lawyer, Brad Smith, said he would need time to read the 1373- paragraph-long judgement in full before deciding on whether to file an appeal.

"One needs to step back and read first, think second and decide third," Smith told reporters in Luxembourg.

Jonathan Zuck, a representative of a group of small- and medium- sized US information technology companies, said the ruling would make its members "very concerned about the implication of this case for the protection of intellectual property in Europe."

"This is a completely haphazard treatment of intellectual property owned by Microsoft. This is a very bad precedent for all the European industry and possible investment by small and medium sized companies in Europe," said Zuck, whose Association for Competitive Technology (ACT) had been supporting Microsoft in Luxembourg.

Microsoft is the world's largest software company and its Windows operating system is used by about 95 per cent of the world's computers.

On March 23, 2004, the EC ruled that Microsoft had carried out anti-competitive practices by refusing to allow its trade rivals access to so-called "interoperability" protocols - instructions needed by servers to work effectively with Windows.

The EC also objected to Microsoft's decision to bundle its own media player with the operating system, arguing this would drive other producers like Real Networks' Real Player out of the market.

The EC, therefore, fined Microsoft and ordered it to offer a version of Windows for sale without the media player. It also forced it to make its interoperability protocols available at a fair price.
The EU court decision leaves all of those measures in place.

However, the court did annul one minor EC decision establishing an independent trustee charged with overseeing the company's cooperation with the order to make its protocols available.

Monday's ruling was seen by officials in Brussels as confirming the EU's power to enforce its antitrust policy and was expected to have important implications on similar cases involving other information technology companies.

Google offers $30m reward for Moon landing

After making its presence felt in the personal computer world, and then becoming environment-friendly technology company, the online advertising and internet search giant, Google is now planning to reach Space.

The computer maker turned Internet jukebox powerhouse Google announced Thursday that it is teaming with the X Prize Foundation, a non-profit prize institute, to launch a commercial competition to send a robot craft to the Moon. Google is financing the 30-million-dollar contest to put a privately funded robotic rover on Mars.

The two partners announced their new prize, dubbed the Lunar X-PRIZE, at Wired's fourth annual NextFest conference in Los Angeles on Thursday morning.

Dr. Peter H. Diamandis and Robert K. Weiss, the chairman and vice chairman of the X-Prize Foundation, along with Google co-founder Larry Page, Wired editor-in-chief Chris Anderson, NASA deputy administrator Shanna Dale, and astronaut Buzz Aldrin were present at the event, which runs September 13-16.

Google said it will give $30 million to the first private companies that can safely land robotic spacecrafts on the moon, indicating the Silicon Valley search giant’s intentions to take the company beyond the internet, and the Earth. "We're thrilled to be sponsoring the Lunar X-PRIZE, which will award a total of 30 million dollars to teams competing around the world to land privately funded spacecraft on the Moon," Alan Eustace, Senior VP of Engineering at Google said yesterday in a statement.

“The Google Lunar X Prize calls on entrepreneurs, engineers and visionaries from around the world to return us to the lunar surface and explore this environment for the benefit of all humanity,” said Peter Diamandis, chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation. “Having Google fund the purse and title the competition punctuates our desire for breakthrough approaches and global participation. We look forward to bringing the historic private space race into every home and classroom.”

The contest to pull off an unmanned lunar landing is open to private companies around the world. As per the rules of the competition, the machine would have to complete at least 500-metre trek on the moon and beam back a gigabyte of images and a defined digital data package, called a "Mooncast", to Earth after its safe landing.

If the machine accomplishes its mission by Dec. 31, 2012, its operator will bag 20 million U.S. dollars. And, to claim the 10-million-dollar second-place prize, the lunar lander would have to go beyond the minimum requirements. The prize amount will drop to US$15 million if the landing takes place by Dec. 31, 2014.

The Santa Monica, California-based X Prize Foundation aims to create radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. This nonprofit prize-generating group began its mission in 2004 by offering the US$10 million Ansari X Prize to encourage private exploration of space.

At the time, the foundation awarded Ansari X Prize worth US $10 million to Burt Rutan, the chief of Scaled Composites and the designer of the Voyager airplane, and financier Paul Allen, the cofounder of Microsoft. The two were able to launch a rocket, called SpaceShipOne, twice, first on June 21, 2004 and then on September 29, 2004.

Diamandis said the new contest, also dubbed Moon 2.0 as the second era of lunar exploration, will once again prove that small teams of dedicated individuals can do what was once thought possible only by large government organizations.

Google’s ease to use, simplicity of design and massive database listings have made it the numero uno search engine in the world. The Web search leader day by day is extending its design magnificence in new directions by making the search services more comprehensive.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin have to be credited for co-finding this giant internet search and advertisement engine, Google, which has helped the masses to be in touch with every sphere of life as it is said, 'Everything is now just a click away and within the reach of everybody.'

This year in June, Google along with a number of other leading technology companies launched a broad-based project, called “Climate Savers Computing Initiative”, an environmental campaign organized to help reduce the emission of Green House gases in the atmosphere. Under their energy savings campaign, the tech titans pledged to introduce more energy-efficient personal computers and software tools that manage power consumption.

Bollywood-curry-western-remake-bombs at the box office

MUMBAI — A remake of the 1975 Bollywood classic film "Sholay" has been pulled from screens across the country after bombing at the box office just two weeks after opening, industry watchers said.

The original, which helped propel then-aspiring actor Amitabh Bachchan to movie legend status, ran for decades at some Indian cinema halls and is often shown on cable channels.

A story about two bandits who help a policeman gain revenge on a notorious gangster who crippled him, it was dubbed the first "curry" western.

Bachchan starred in the remake as well but he could not help it overcome a panning by critics. The remake's director, Ram Gopal Varma, said he watched the first version some 27 times and it was the inspiration for him to become a film maker.

But his version, "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag" (The Fire of Ram Gopal Varma) -- named after the director for licensing reasons -- has been withdrawn by many theatre owners because of poor attendance and stiff competition.

"The film had to be withdrawn from theatres because there were no audiences and also the fact the other films did well," Bollywood trade analyst Komal Nahta said.

India has thousands of movie theatres nationwide but the exact number that showed and then withdrew the film was not known.

Varma, a director acclaimed for his usual racy thrillers, accepted he had fallen short of his standards.

"I feel bad for the rest of the people involved with the film, the actors, the technicians, etc. That they trusted me, they went with my vision, which obviously was wrong," he told the Mumbai Mirror.

Dravid resigns as India captain

Dravid resigns as India captain

For three full months, indeed more, Rahul Dravid guarded his secret zealously. He didn't give any indication of it as he led Team India single-mindedly and passionately, plotting the downfall of England and motivating his own mates to surpass themselves. Yet, in his mind, an even more far-reaching and startling plot had already taken shape.
He disclosed it fully only on Thursday, taking even the PCL-intoxicated BCCI by total surprise. But he had already and quite firmly decided to give up the crown of thorns. "There is no suddenness to all this," a source very close to Dravid revealed. "He had decided to give up the captaincy a long time back," he added. "He just wants to get back to doing what he likes doing: bat and contribute to the team's cause as a player.
" The source, who was one of the few privy to Dravid's decision and his deepest thoughts, clarified even the team had no inkling of his plans. "No. He didn't discuss it with anybody at all (even though he may have hinted about it to Pawar in England)." Probably, because nothing in the dressing room remains a secret any more. Interestingly, it is now learnt Dravid had seriously offered to quit after the World Cup debacle itself.
"It had nothing to do with the team's exit. It's just that he wasn't comfortable with all the other things that come along with captaincy," he said. He was, however, persuaded to stay on as Indian cricket was going through a major crisis. With Greg Chappell already going out ingloriously, with almost all the seniors under severe attack and with talk of rifts among the players, he also agreed it wasn't a good time to leave the team headless.
He promised to stay on for six months. As the tenure came to an end, coincidentally with a stunning display in England, he was ready to put his plan into motion. On Thursday morning, as the BCCI unveiled its grand Twenty20 plans, he told Sharad Pawar of his plans; by the evening, he was back with his resignation letter. Dravid requested the president to hold on to his secret for one more day to avoid a full-scale drama and the agony of facing intrusive television cameras once again.
Pawar kept his promise and made the announcement on Friday, once the captain had got into his hideout. "I have always been single-minded," Dravid had told TOI during an exclusive interview in England. "I take great joy in doing things well. Whether it's studies, playing any sport or captaining, I like to be focused and enjoy doing things nicely, to the best of my ability," he explained. Dravid clearly wasn't enjoying the various chores and responsibilities that he had to perform as captain.
Among other things, he didn't particularly seem to relish the constant grilling at the hands of the media, especially when it assumed a personal nature. He often showed exasperation when stories were distorted, manipulated or concocted by a few. He expressed helplessness too as he often had to come out to defend either himself, his decisions or the actions of his players. Amazingly though it never looked like he had reached the end of his tolerance.
Even though India won a Test series after 21 years, he was criticised for not enforcing the follow-on in the third Test at the Oval; even after coming back strongly to take the One-day series into the deciding game, he was found guilty of not batting at Number Three; on many occasions there were insinuations about the players chosen or fielded too. Dravid absorbed everything in his inimitable style: calmly and with dignity.
He did everything within his means to be seen as an aggressive leader ("One doesn't have to show one's emotions on the field to be considered aggressive"), to show he was not a loner ("I may not hang out at discos or pubs but that doesn't mean I am not a team man"), to show he can take the dirt ("I am not foolish enough to think I won't be criticised"). Yet, in the end, it had clearly got too much.
He has led the side for two years and seen a fair share of controversies too. His record is as good as it can get: 35-24-3 in ODIs and 8-6-11 in Tests. More importantly, he has won series in West Indies and England and facilitated a maiden Test win in South Africa too. Dravid has made up his mind and one can be sure he will not regret it. Even if he does, he shall guard it equally zealously.

India in Super 8s of T20 World Cup

India in Super 8s of T20 World Cup

DURBAN: In only the second tie-breaker 'bowl out' in a Twenty20 cricket match, India beat Pakistan 3-0 on Friday after their Group D World Championship match had ended in a thrilling tie here. Both India (three points) and Pakistan (two points), however, progressed to the second round, Super Eights, from this group with minnows Scotland crashing out without a win.

After both teams had scored identical 141 in the allocated 20 overs, the 'bowl out', in which five nominated bowlers from both sides bowled at the unguarded stumps, was employed. The first three Indians - Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Robin Uthappa - hit the stumps while none of the first three Pakistanis - Yasir Arafat, Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi - could hit the timber as the packed and noisy crowd cheered on at Kingsmead ground.

It meant that pacers Irfan Pathan, who bowled magnificently on his comeback into the national team, and Sreesanth, the other nominated bowlers, were not required to bowl in the tie-breaker. In the only other bowl out in the short history of Twenty20 cricket, New Zealand had beaten West Indies 3-0. The only consolation for Pakistan was that their pacer Mohammed Asif was adjudged the Man of the Match for having taken four wickets with superb bowling. Earlier in the day, Pakistan, chasing India's 141 for nine wickets in 20 overs, needed one run off the last ball from Sreesanth, but Misbah-ul-Haq (53, 35 balls, 7x4s, 1x6) was run out while taking the winning run.

Pakistan finished at 141 for seven wickets in 20 overs, with Yasir Arafat remaining unbeaten on 12 off five balls. Misbah, however, played an important knock after the top batting order had almost failed. Captain Shoaib Malik scored 18-ball 20, which included three boundaries. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also played a part in the win as he scored a 31-ball 33 (3x4s, 1x6) and Pathan chipped in with 15-ball 20 that contained two successive sixes. Virender Sehwag, who was also staging a comeback, managed just five runs.

50,000 to get jobs under Udyoga Sri

50,000 to get jobs under Udyoga Sri

Warangal, Sept. 10: Creating employment opportunities for around 50,000 unemployed youth in the district is being planned through the Rajiv Udyoga Sri scheme. As part of the State-wide project to implement the job scheme, a high-level committee has also been constituted with the district collector heading it in the district to create employment opportunities.

It is proposed to offer a training programme for the potential candidates initially and later to place them in suitable positions in various sectors. The high-level committee has divided the candidates to be given jobs into two categories — unskilled and skilled. The unemployed youth with professional qualifications like MCA, computer science, B.Tech, polytechnic, bio-technology, pharmacy and other courses would be given training in job skills.

After the training, industry exposure would also be arranged in order to train for job-fit and placements would be arranged for them in industries. Similarly, for the unskilled youth with qualifications like intermediate and SSC would also be given training in fields like marketing, plumbing, electrical and construction works.
They would be skilled people in some or other trade and would be placed with the construction companies and other private or government agencies.

Massive training programmes would be organised for thousands of unemployed youth in phases. It is targeted that every trained unemployed person must be accommodated. During the next two years, it is targeted to create employment opportunities for at least 50,000 youth in the district.

Federer Collects 12th Grand Slam Title

Federer Collects 12th Grand Slam Title
Sweat dripped from Roger Federer’s black headband in the United States Open men’s final, as the endearing newcomer Novak Djokovic held seven set points over him like a mirror to his vulnerability.Djokovic had been the comedian of the United States Open, a 20-year-old Serb who had won over the crowd with his postmatch impressions of fellow players as well as his gutsy baseline game.
Federer did not care for his act. And in the accelerated end, Djokovic, playing in his first Grand Slam final, was not yet ready for the inimitable Federer.
As the world’s No. 1 playing in his 14th Grand Slam final, Federer showed why he is the reigning impresario of tennis. He pounced on Djokovic’s mistakes yesterday, dissecting him for a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4 triumph to collect his 12th Grand Slam title.
“He had his chances today, many of them,” Federer said. “You could sing a song about it. It’s a tough one for him to swallow, because especially him losing in the end straight sets, it’s tough.”
Those were the closing words of his news conference, perhaps fueling a compelling rivalry between the fashionable traditionalist, Federer, and the YouTube star, Djokovic.
Not that Federer, 26, was willing to admit it. He is chasing one man, Pete Sampras, the retired career leader with 14 Grand Slam titles.
With four consecutive Wimbledon titles and four consecutive United States Open championships, Federer has climbed closer. He is the first man in the open era to win four straight United States Open titles, the first since Bill Tilden won six straight national titles from 1920 to 1925.
Federer might have struggled briefly in the middle of the tournament — losing the first set to the 6-foot-9 John Isner in the third round and to Feliciano López in the fourth — but he crisply eliminated Andy Roddick, Nikolay Davydenko and Djokovic in straight sets.
The young players motivate Federer, he said. “Seeing them challenge me, beating them in the final, it’s really for me the best feeling,” he said.
Djokovic, the No. 3 player in the world, made some notable friends and fans. Sitting in his box were the 2006 women’s champion, Maria Sharapova (“It’s just a friendship we have,” he said), and Robert De Niro, whose restaurant he ate in during the tournament.
Djokovic upset Federer in Montreal last month in a third-set tie breaker, and he came into yesterday’s final filled with confidence. He blamed himself as much as he complimented Federer.
“I think I was mentally weaker today on the important parts than he is mentally stronger,” Djokovic said.
He left war-torn Belgrade at 12 ½ years old, when his parents, owners of a pizza restaurant, sent him to train at Niki Pilic’s academy in Munich. Eight years later, the sacrifice paid off.
His mother, Dijana, wearing the Djokovic team uniform, was happy with her son’s performance here against Federer.
“Next year he will win for sure,” she said. “I know that he’s better.”
In the first set, Djokovic and Federer were feeling each other out from the baseline. Djokovic broke Federer’s serve, then served at 6-5 for the first set, at 40-love.
Federer erased all three set points. Djokovic earned and lost two more. On the third deuce, Djokovic hit a backhand that fluttered wide. Federer had his first break point; Djokovic double-faulted to send the set to a tie breaker.
When Djokovic netted a backhand to even the tie breaker at 3-3, he slammed his racket to the court. Djokovic double-faulted again, on set point for Federer.
In the 12th game of the second set, Djokovic had two more set points. Federer came back with an ace to erase the first. On the second, Djokovic’s forehand was called long and he challenged. The replay showed the ball had barely missed the baseline.
“It could have gone any way,” Djokovic said. “In these important moments, I was doing something wrong, and then I missed that shot and I was unlucky.”
Then he joked about his lost chances.
“My next book is going to be called ‘Seven Set Points,’ ” Djokovic said, deadpan. “No, I’m joking. I can say I’m sorry. I wish I can dress up and play those 40-love points again.
“I have to look in a positive way. This has been one of the most amazing experiences. This is one of the biggest cities in the world. The crowd — it was a great atmosphere. I am really glad with my success on and off the court.”
Federer, who scored an extraordinary five-set Wimbledon victory against No. 2 Rafael Nadal, said that championship would be his favorite.
“But New York has definitely grown on me the last few years,” he said.
He could not say the same for Djokovic. Federer said he still considered Nadal his true rival, even as Djokovic joined the conversation.
Federer was dismissive of Djokovic’s impressions of other players — Nadal, Roddick, Andre Agassi and even Federer.
“In the locker room he’s always very respectful toward me,” Federer said of Djokovic. “He’s pretty quiet. I didn’t see the stuff he did on court the other day. I didn’t see what apparently he did in the locker room either.
“I know some guys weren’t happy. I know some guys might think it’s funny. He’s walking a tightrope, for sure. If fans like it, it’s good for tennis, to be honest. It’s good to have a character like him out there, there’s no doubt.”
Federer left no doubt. For now.
