Organic food helps to lengthen lives: Study

London 29-Oct-2007.

Those who scoff at organic foods, eat your words. If researchers are to be believed, organic food is more nutritious than ordinary produce and helps to lengthen our lives.

Yes, according to a study in Britain, organic fruits and vegetables contain 40 per cent more antioxidants which can cut the risk of cancer and heart disease, and they also have higher levels of beneficial minerals such as iron and zinc.

"There is enough evidence now that the level of good things is higher in organics," 'The Sunday Times' reported today, quoting lead researcher Prof Carlo Leifert as saying.

In fact, the researchers came to the conclusion after collecting evidence over a period of four years.

They grew fruit and vegetables and reared cattle on adjacent organic and non-organic sites on a 725-acre farm attached to Newcastle University in Britain, and at other sites in Europe.

The researchers found that the levels of antioxidants in milk from organic herds were up to 90 per cent higher than in milk from conventional herds.

As well as finding up to 40 per cent more antioxidants in organic vegetables, the study found that organic tomatoes from Greece had significantly higher levels of antioxidants, including flavo-noids which reduce coronary heart disease.

"The differences were so marked that organic produce would help to increase the nutrient intake of people not eating the recommended five portions a day of fruit and vegetables.

"If you have just 20 per cent more antioxidants and you can't get your kids to do five a day, then you might just be okay with four a day," said Professor Leifert.

The 12-million-pounds study has been funded by the European Union.

First Asian Breast Cancer Congress to Be Held in Delhi Next Year

It is breast cancer awareness month and the pink ribbons are out.

The pink ribbon for breast cancer was founded by SELF, a Condé Nast health publication, for free distribution at Estée Lauder beauty counters 15 years ago, and since then giving away the ribbons became a means of spreading the message of awareness and prevention, not to mention a catalyst for raising millions of dollars of funds for research.

According to the data provided by the European Society for Medical Oncology, India has 79,000 new breast cancer cases every year.

An oncologist at Hyderabad’s Apollo Hospital said in a recent news report that one breast cancer case is detected in India every six and a half minutes.

In February 2008, Delhi will host the first Asian Breast Cancer Congress in a bid to spread awareness.

Apparently not enough Indian women accept the idea of a mammogram yet. According to a handbook published by SELF, mammograms can detect about 85 per cent of breast cancers in women without symptoms — and when cancer is discovered early, more than 98 per cent survive.

If you are a healthy woman 40 or older, commit to yourself that you will get your annual mammogram. If you’re in your 20s and 30s, a monthly self-exam is advised.

Although there isn’t a prevention plan, certain foods build resistance to cancer, like fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, colourful berries and whole grains.

And speaking of vegetables, a recent study from Michigan State University shows that diets rich in cabbage had a significant positive impact on reducing breast cancer risk.

The phyto-oestrogen and antioxidant power in flax seed is raising its profile as an anti-cancer food. A healthy intake of fibre sweeps out toxins and and excess oestrogen from the body. Of course, a regular exercise routine is always beneficial; a leaner body and healthier diet cannot hurt.

Biocon recently won Indian regulatory approval to market breast cancer drug Abraxane in the country. And a brand new breast cancer prevention pill, Raloxifene, has US government approval.

Ultimately, though, early detection is the only cure. Of course, the message has to be spread that breast cancer is not exclusively a woman’s disease, because its rate of incidence among men is growing.

So go get yourself a pink ribbon, but remember it isn’t a fashion statement — it’s a reminder to commit yourself to a healthy future.

Hulu Readies Its Online TV, Dodging the Insults

29-Oct-2007.

The knives are out for Hulu.com

Hulu is the new-media creation of two old-media rivals, NBC, which is owned by General Electric, and Fox, owned by the News Corporation. Since March, when the broadcasters announced their joint effort to bring free, ad-supported television shows to the Web, critics have pounced, predicting the venture would be doomed by diverging agendas, technical challenges and an all-powerful enemy: YouTube.

Skeptical bloggers even slapped Hulu with a derisive moniker: “Clown Co.”

Now the defense is ready to present its case.

Today, Hulu, now an independent company with more than a hundred employees and its own offices in Los Angeles, will begin privately testing its new service with select users at Hulu.com. It will also begin sending its videos to the sites of five distribution partners, Microsoft, AOL, MySpace, Yahoo and Comcast.

Hulu is presenting select episodes of some 90 television shows, including new and old programs from NBC (“The Office,” “The A-Team”), Fox (“24” and “The Simpsons”) and an assortment of smaller broadcasters like USA Networks.

It has also added two new partners, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which distributes programs like “Chapelle’s Show” and “Reno 911,” and Sony Pictures Television, which will make selections in its archives like “I Dream of Jeannie,” available on Hulu.com.

All the shows are viewable inside a Web browser and festooned with advertisements.
“You will not find this lineup from top to bottom anywhere else,” said Jason Kilar, 36, chief executive of Hulu and a nine-year veteran of Amazon.com.

Mr. Kilar says that although some of the same shows are also available free to viewers on sites like NBC.com and Fox.com, Hulu has a unique agenda: to marry the largest collection of professionally-produced video to the widest audience possible.

“We don’t have to worry about showing TV schedules or letting fans get to know the actors,” he said. “All we have to worry about is the video.”

Rival ABC, owned by the Walt Disney Company, is focusing on bringing high-quality versions of its programs to its own site, ABC.com. CBS has developed its own relationships with video sites like AOL.com and a new independent online video service, Joost.

Hulu, demonstrated last week to reporters, might surprise some of its critics. In addition to television shows, the company is experimenting with free movies.

The service will begin with 10 films, including “Master and Commander” and “Sideways,” though each will run with commercial breaks.

Hulu’s long-awaited introduction and new content deals are giving the executives involved in the effort a chance to respond to the criticism.

“I think there’s a snarky desire to say this is big dumb media and this is a big dumb joint venture,” said Peter Chernin, president of the News Corporation.

He said he first conceived of Hulu when thinking of ways to get Fox shows distributed as widely as possible. “If there is a product that’s attractive to consumers, we’ll be just fine,” he said.

Hulu might prove most attractive to advertisers, since the videos on Hulu are chock-full of promotional opportunities. Messages for companies like Cisco and General Motors remain above the video player during each program.

Hulu is also using overlays, promotional graphics that roam over the bottom of the screen during a show. (YouTube is also experimenting with this ad format).

Hulu is, however, cutting by half the length of traditional commercial breaks during its videos.

For each show streamed online, Hulu splits the revenue with the content creator and the distribution site, like MySpaceTV or MSN. The revenue splits vary by the type of program, but the content owner takes a majority, according to Mr. Kilar.

Hulu will offer some features not available on other online video sites. One innovation lets users share television shows and video clips with friends.

An easy editing tool lets users isolate a select clip of any length from a program and e-mail that clip to a friend or post it on a blog. “This is a big deal,” Mr. Kilar said. “It is a great way to let users express themselves through our content.”

Mr. Kilar promises that Hulu will continually add new shows from its two primary backers. “Fox and NBC are doing everything possible to clear the rights and get us material,” he said.

Critics have questioned whether NBC and Fox are truly motivated to make Hulu succeed. Both networks make many of the same programs freely available on their own Web sites.

In addition, Fox sells ad-free, downloadable versions of its programs on Apple’s iTunes. NBC pulled its material off iTunes earlier this fall, citing Apple’s reluctance to let content creators set their own price and now sells shows on Amazon.com’s Unbox service.

NBC recently removed its content from YouTube to make way for the Hulu introduction. Hulu “is really the centerpiece of what we’re trying to evolve to digitally,” said Jeff Zucker, president and chief executive of NBC Universal.

Hulu must still overcome some significant obstacles. If it wants to become the true destination site for professionally made TV shows and movies, it must attract other major content providers like Viacom and Disney. Those media companies reportedly rejected previous offers to participate in the service.

The executives involved in Hulu say they will again approach those companies and others when the service is offered more widely, and give them better revenue-sharing terms than they can find anywhere else.

But big companies like Viacom will likely be reluctant to embrace an effort jointly owned by two of their largest competitors.

“These are all friends of mine,” Mr. Chernin of the News Corporation said. “They all have their own strategies. They have every right to sit back and see how this works and if it is in their best interests. I’m optimistic that others will join us, but even if nothing else changes, I already think this has more premium video than anywhere else.”

Another challenge: Hulu’s operating costs could quickly escalate. Hulu wants to offer the rich video that people are used to seeing on television.

It will have to spend far more than other video sites to store the video on servers and then transmit the files to users, and at the same time give away much of the advertising revenue to its partners.

YouTube, by contrast, does not pay anything for its content (users freely submit it). It gets to keep all its ad revenue and does not provide video in a high-quality format. Still, because of the high operating costs of running a video-sharing service, YouTube is not thought to be very profitable for Google.

“To me the biggest challenge is economics,” said James L. McQuivey, an analyst with Forrester Research who was briefed on Hulu last week.

“The content is good, and they are distributing it in all the right places. But over time they will have pressure to increase the quality of the streams and that is going to raise costs even more.”

Mr. Zucker does not appear to be concerned about the long-term financial viability of Hulu. That might actually provide more fodder for those critics who say Hulu has so many diverging mandates that it will be difficult for it to create an enduring, stand-alone business.

“At a minimum it’s another way for us to offer our content to users and get paid for it,” Mr. Zucker said. “If the site itself does well, that will be gravy on top of it.”

Cheap laptop program still eyes India

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. 29-Oct-2007.

The so-called US$100 laptops for children may make it to India after all.

Last year,India rebuffed One Laptop Per Child, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology spinoff that created rugged little computers for kids in the developing world.

India's education minister was quoted calling the project "pedagogically suspect," apparently because it demands children be allowed to take the laptops home to maximize exploration.

Being shut out of the world's second-most populous country seemed a defeat for One Laptop Per Child, which has had a tougher sell than it expected.

Mass production of its roughly $190 laptops is expected to begin soon, but with fewer than the several million computers originally envisioned.

Even after hearing the minister's comments, One Laptop Per Child kept talking to Indian officials, companies and non-governmental agencies.

And a pilot test began recently in which 22 children in first through fourth grades in a rural, one-room school in the Indian state of Maharashtra are using the computers.

Carla Gomez-Monroy, the education consultant who launched the test, said One Laptop Per Child has learned that working with local partners will be crucial in India, where dozens of languages are spoken.

It also helps that One Laptop Per Child has dropped its initial goal of getting each participating government to buy at least one million computers. Now, far smaller orders and donations are being encouraged.

"The model has evolved," Gomez-Monroy said. And in India's case, she said, it could mean distribution begins as soon as June.

First Look: OpenSUSE 10.3 Desktop Linux

Beneath its slick graphical polish, the latest SUSE is still a hobbyist's OS at heart.Part 1 of a special five-part series.
Monday, October 29, 2007
OpenSUSE 10.3 is the fourth stable release from the OpenSUSE project, the online community founded by Novell to further develop the SUSE Linux operating system.

It ships stuffed to the gills with the usual assortment of open-source applications, including the OpenOffice.org office suite, the GIMP image-manipulation software, and many multimedia bells and whistles. In fact, OpenSUSE has more software and features crammed into it than you know what to do with, which proves a mixed blessing.

The OpenSUSE distribution DVD disc boots to the familiar SUSE Linux installer.

A Live CD approach, like that found in Ubuntu 7.10, would have been more versatile; but even though OpenSUSE's method seems old-fashioned, it's at least effective. The SUSE installer is top-notch, and OpenSUSE 10.3 dresses it in attractive, professional-looking new graphics.

It's not as effortless as it could be--the installation process gives you enough options to get you into trouble--but novices should have no problems if they play along with the default selections.
Desktop Interface Debate

OpenSUSE offers a choice between two different desktop environments, KDE or Gnome. Superficially, they both provide GUI features similar to Windows or Mac OS X, but they differ in the details--enough so that desktop preference has become a hot debate within the desktop Linux community.

Gnome arguably has become the favorite with recent SUSE releases, now that many of the prominent Gnome developers work full-time for Novell, but OpenSUSE's Gnome desktop differs from the stock version. The menu bar on the top of the screen has been removed, consolidated into a single taskbar along the bottom.

The chief feature of the taskbar is a new menu, code-named Slab, that gives one-stop access to the most important applications, control panels, and recently used documents. The overall effect is very Windows-like, but unfortunately it doesn't do much to improve productivity.

The action of reaching for the lower-left corner of the screen feels familiar, but finding applications among the Slab menus can be tedious. It's too sluggish, and the organization of the menu icons does not seem particularly intuitive--if you're looking for a spreadsheet, for example, you must first scroll through almost a full page of games.

The same must be said of YAST (Yet Another Setup Tool), SUSE's other major contribution to the Linux desktop interface. YAST tries to gather all of the important control panels and system-configuration tools into a single, combined application. It's a noble goal, but users have often complained of YAST's poor performance in the past, and OpenSUSE 10.3 doesn't seem to have made any significant improvement in this respect.

Hardware Hassles, Software Softness

Compounding the problem, OpenSUSE's hardware support seems iffy, particularly on laptops. It failed to set the correct resolution on an early-generation Centrino laptop's wide-screen display, and nothing I tried could fix it.

As I slogged my way through YAST's configuration screens, the unused portions of the screen slowly filled with strange colors. No other recent Linux distribution I've tried has exhibited this problem on the same hardware.

Similarly, the installer detected the Wi-Fi chip set properly, but couldn't seem to connect to the wireless network to download the latest updates during the install process. OpenSUSE fared better on a desktop system, but its inconsistency made me leery.

In fact, inconsistency seems to be the watchword for this release. OpenSUSE 10.3 gets the job done, and clearly some thought has been put into its usability, but an overambitious software selection and haphazard execution undermine the distribution's better qualities.

For example, one of the advertised new features of OpenSUSE 10.3 is Compiz Fusion, the graphics engine that enables flashy desktop effects competitive with those in Mac OS X or Windows Vista.

While the Ubuntu team went to pains to integrate Compiz Fusion and enable it by default, however, on OpenSUSE it's merely an option, and then only if you know where to look for it.

Similarly, a security-conscious user will be confronted by four separate icons on the Applications menu that look like keyrings, in addition to the 'Lockdown Manager'.

You can guess that one of them manages your passwords, but which? OpenSUSE wins points for its high-quality documentation, but its initial learning curve is more difficult than it needs to be for neophytes.

Ultimately, OpenSUSE's bid to be all things to all users betrays its origins as the developmental branch of SUSE Linux, and as a result, this distribution will be most attractive to Linux hobbyists. It's free, so nothing is stopping you from giving it a whirl.

But business power users will benefit more from a polished, commercial desktop Linux distribution such as Xandros, while new users will likely find Ubuntu's limited menu more palatable than OpenSUSE's buffet.

Free calls on the web as 3 launches Skype phone

Richard Wray Monday October 29, 2007 Guardian Unlimited

Mobile phone company 3 today unveiled its Skype phone, which supports free calls over the internet.

The phone goes on sale in the UK on Friday, November 2. It will allow Skype users to make free calls and send texts, and will also work as a normal mobile phone.

The 3 Skypephone will be free to contract customers prepared to pay at least £12 a month on standard mobile calls. Pay-as-you-go users can pick up the phone for £49.99, and will also have to top up their account with at least £10 each month.

To enable Skype to go mobile in this way brings free internet calls together with an affordable 3G handset. Mobile has the potential to massively increase access to internet calling," said Kevin Russell, chief executive of 3 UK.

3, owned by Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa, will use its own mobile network to carry VoIP (voice-over-internet protocol) calls.

This should mean the service is better quality than mobile VoIP calls that are carried over the public internet.

3 has been working with Skype, owned by eBay, for well over a year and already offers the Skype service on its niche X-Series platform. There are thought to be around 2.5 million Skype users in Britain.

The 3 Skypephone will also be sold in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden.

Ashok Leyland signs agreement with Nissan

CHENNAI:29-Oct-2007.

Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group, and Nissan Motor Company Ltd.
have together drawn up an investment plan of the order of $500 million to set up three independent joint ventures in India to make light commercial vehicles (LCVs), assembly engines and develop LCV products, respectively.

A master co-operation agreement to this effect was signed here on Monday by R.Seshasayee, Managing Director of Ashok Leyland, and Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Company.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Seshasayee said the joint venture partners had zeroed in on three states - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttranchal - for the LCV project.

``A decision on the location (of the LCV project) will be taken in the next few weeks,'' he added. The LCV venture would have 51 per cent equity holding by Ashok Leyland. The rest would be held by the Hinduja Group.

Mr. Ghosn said the joint venture would commence production of LCVs in 2010. The joint venture would make new generation Nissan Atlas F24 light duty truck. Further, it would also make a range of products in the 2.5 to 8 tonne gross weight category.

``In the medium term, the production volume will go grow beyond 100,000 units a year,'' Mr. Ghosn said.

The Nissan CEO also announced that the proposed joint venture technology development company would be located in Chenni and would manufacture LCV products and related power trains. The products would be sold under both Ashok Leyland and Nissan brands. The joint venture would see both Ashok Leyland and Nissan holding equal share.

In the joint venture for assembly engines, Nissan would hold majority 51 per cent stake. The Indian company would have the rest.

The location of this specific joint venture was still to be worked out. Mr. Ghosn also said that the two partners would co-operate to leverage each other's dealer networks in specific global markets.

The press conference also saw G.P. Hinduja, President of the Hinduja Group, his son Dheeraj G. Hinduja, Co-Chairman of Ashok Leyland, and Ashok Hinduja present.

Mr. Dheeraj Hinduja said the tie up with Nissan ``marks a new journey for Ashok Leyland.'' He said the company had for long been focussed on medium and heavy commercial vehicles and was now expanding to 180,000 units.

In the wake of tie-up with Nissan, Mr. Dheeraj Hinduja said the Group had set a sales target of Rs.30000 crore to be hit by 2011-12.

Fielding a range of questions, Mr. Ghosn said Nissan ``is looking forward for pioneering a new era in LCV'' now that it had tied up with Ashok Leyland.

He was confident that the Hinduja Group's company would contribute a new perspective to the frugal engineering concept pursed by Nissan.

``Partnering is a key to our approach in India,'' he said, citing India's potential for high skill, high knowledge and ability to participate in global opportunity.

In this context, he pointed to couple of other joint ventures that Nissan had initialled in India. One is for passenger car with Mahindras and Renault, which is coming up in Tamil Nadu.

The other is with Bajaj to make car in the price category of $2500. Mr. Ghosn informed presspersons that the Tamil Nadu Government had told Nissan that the land for the passenger car project had been fully acquired.

To a question, Mr. Ghosn said, ``we will establish as many tie-ups as we need in this country.''

He, however, asserted that the tie-up with Ashok Leyland was exclusively for the production of LCVs. To another question, he said Nissan had no plan at the moment to produce heavy duty vehicles in India.

Mr.Ghosn indicated the LCV joint venture would aim at exporting 20 per cent its production over a period of time. The CEO said since Nissan tied up with Renault way back in 1999, the global vehicle production had gone up from 53 million to 65 million.

Sales in the developing markets had gone up from 14 million to 24 million during this period.

``All growth is happening in developing markets,'' he said, justifying Nissan's decision to go to countries like India.

Want to tap new opportunities in India: Khattar

NEW DELHI: 29-Oct-2007.

Jagdish Khattar, who has led the country's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) for more than eight years on Monday said he wants to tap the opportunities that the new India offered, possibly in the form of an entrepreuner, after he retires in December this year.

"In the last eight years, there were a lot of opportunities in the country and I feel left out of those opportunities and I propose to tap those now," Khattar said.

Pressed on what he exactly wanted to do post-retirement, he said: "Ideally I would like to be an entrepreneur, there is a bug to do something different.

" Sources close to him said that Khattar was offered a fresh term as Managing Director by MSIL's parent Suzuki Motor Co of Japan, but the former bureaucrat declined as he was more keen on going on his own.

The MSIL Board at its meeting today announced Khattar's retirement and appointed incumbent chairman Shinzo Nakanishi to his place.

As per Khattar's contract with Suzuki Motor, his term was supposed to last till the age of 65 years or end-2007, whichever was earlier.

He will turn 65 on December 18. Describing his tenure with Maruti as satisfying, Khattar said: "The company had more than 50 per cent of market share during those years and I have had a very good experience."

His stint with MSIL has been an eventful one, which saw the company being privatised completely with the government exiting the joint venture and Suzuki Motor Co (SMC) picking up a majority stake.

Why Dravid was dropped

New Delhi, October 28, 2007

Rahul Dravid's disappointment was apparent soon after the selectors dropped a bombshell on the former Indian skipper announcing their decision to 'rest' the wall for the first two matches of the Pakistan series, in effect dropping him from the Indian ODI team on Saturday (October 27).

Even as cricket enthusiasts come to terms with Dravid's shock exit from the ODI team your channel TIMES NOW brings you the INSIDE STORY on why the wall was pulled down.

As Niranjan Shah read out names for the Pakistan one-day series, the room waited with baited breath. Fifteen names and there was no Rahul Dravid.

Captain of India until six weeks ago, the most consistent factor in Team India had been interrupted and the Colonel who stumped him had this reason for his exclusion.

He said, " Good batsmen need rest." The great wall of India had been pulled down and the chairman of selectors said, " This is a winning team" about the team he had selected.

This is probably the statistic that Vengsarkar will flash to justify his decision

.LAST TEN MATCHES:
RUNS 80AVG 8.88

The statistics that will leave him without a defense though would be as follows:
Dravid's average in victories against Pakistan : 53Dravid's average in Indian victories: 51

After criticizing his decisions as captain, whether it was persevering with Virender Sehwag or not batting at number three in the series against England, Vengsarkar failed to build a bond with Dravid.

So when Dravid decided to call time on his captaincy it was not Vengsarkar he spoke to, it was Sharad Pawar.

Vengsarkar was prompt in returning the favour and had this to say when asked if he had spoken to Dravid about his dropping -- "No I have not spoken to him.

" The Inside storyIt all began at the Wankhede on the eve of the final one-dayer against Australia when the chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar and skipper MS Dhoni were seen discussing the final eleven on their fingers unfortunately there was no finger with Rahul Dravid counted on it.

The man who was marshalling his troops was suddenly on drinks duty.

When asked after the match about the Dravid's exclusion, this is what Dhoni said: " He was rested."

Cut to Ahmedabad and the Colonel was going back on his rotation policy, one that he swore by not so long ago. He said, "We have a pool of 27 players and we will rotate them."

According to one of the selectors, the suggestion was to drop Sourav Ganguly but Vengsarkar was clear if any of the seniors had to go it was Dravid.

The reason Vengsarkar gave was "… that Dravid is a one-dimensional player and does not add value to the one-day team"

There were only two selectors who were against the exclusion of Dravid. The others it seemed had already been taken into confidence by the chairman before the meeting had begun according to the BCCI official.

When Times Now tried to get a reaction from Vengsarkar about Dravid, the Colonel refused to answer but it is not long before Vengsarkar will have to answer some rather tough questions in the way he has treated one of India's greatest batsmen ever.

Life surely has come full circle but is this in the interest of Indian cricket because half a world away the Australians await this young Indian team for a long and demanding tour

.Contrary to public opinionDravid's exclusion seems to have gone against public opinion for despite his poor runs in the recent past, the wall still has backers when TIMES NOW carried out the PLAY SELECTOR SERIES where a cross section of people voted for their favourite players to be included in the squad, the former Indian skipper was STILL one of the front runners.

Your channel gave you the opportunity to select Team India for the Pakistan series through Play Selector -- a series that was aimed at getting the popular belief together but just as the selctors dropped the bomb-shell by not picking Rahul Dravid for the first two ODIs, its clear that the selectors went against the popular belief.

It was a clear fight between RP Singh and S Sreesanth but Kerala Speedstar S Sreesanth has beaten him to the top spot with 28 per cent votes. RP Singh lost some vote share finishing second with 23% of the vote.

Both find places in the squad for the first two one-dayers but Rahul Dravid who came close in the third position with 17 % of votes did not find a place in the squad where as Rohit Sharma who had polled just 9 % of votes was retained. To make matters worse, Virender Sehwag who never featured in the top 7 was selected ahead of the former skipper.

India's most experienced One-day bowler Zaheer Khan was 5th with Dinesh Karthik as both of them polled 6% of the votes but while Zaheer was picked , Dinesh Karthik lost out and finally the last spot was snapped up by Murali Kartik at 4% of the votes.

You have played a selector and the popular belief has been put to rest by the five wise men as they axed the wall of Indian cricket.

OCt-28-2007.

Here is good news for BlackBerry users worldwide. An agreement has brought together the highest profile social-networking player, Facebook - with almost 50 million vigorous users, and an the mobile manufacturing leader looking for market share alongside giants like Microsoft Corp., Palm Inc., Symbian Ltd., Apple Inc. and other device and OS vendors.

Keeping this in view officials of both the companies met at the CTIA Wireless Show in March in Orlando and agreed to work together to bring mutual benefits.

In fact the Facebook and RIM tie-up proclamation was made at a vital juncture when Microsoft was purchasing a $240 million minor stake in Facebook taking the company’s value to about $15 billion.

Although T-Mobile USA Inc. will be the first to develop a Facebook application into the BlackBerries it sells, BlackBerry users on all other networks too would enjoy the facility to download the application from Wednesday next.

Since the platform is open to others also, third parties too will be able to add new applications.

And this makes the company different. Addressing the CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment show in San Francisco, Facebook Co-Founder and Vice-President of Engineering Dustin Moskovitz revealed how to take a photograph with a BlackBerry Curve device, adding tags to it and posting it to Facebook without activating the Facebook application.

He also displayed the other attributes of the application that include facility set special ring tones for Facebook events and also request friends to join Facebook through BlackBerry e-mail.

In addition, Facebook utilized the opportunity to announce a number of new progresses made in the field of mobile phones and claimed to have four million active users by the end of this month.

Currently, Facebook services are available on most major U.S. and Canadian carriers and now Moskovitz declared its first carrier agreement outside North America.

This is with O2 (UK) Ltd.While Facebook has also set up its services for the iPhone's full Web browser, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. has decided to henceforth aim for international corporations and in its first phase it plans to enter the huge Chinese market.

Computer games good for kids: Study

LONDON: 27-Oct-2007.]

Playing computer games may not always slacken kids’ performance at school, for a new study has found that children who play computer games before going off to school get better grades than those who don’t play such games.

In the study conducted at the St Columba's Primary in Dundee, a group of Primary 5 and 6 pupils played for 20 minutes on Nintendo's handheld DS console at the start of each day which showed ‘dramatic’ advancements in the classroom after gaming for 20 minutes before the lessons began.

The game, called ‘More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima’ features number challenges, reading tests, problem-solving exercises and memory puzzles.

The tasks are designed to ‘exercise the brain’ by increasing blood for to the pre-frontal cortex.

Ten weeks later the group was given a Maths test with the results showing a ten per cent average increase compared to those taken before the experiment.

Additionally, the average time for completion of the test dropped from 17 minutes, 1 second to 13 minutes, 19 seconds.

Some of the children even halved the time it took them while maintaining or improving upon their score.

Another group was given the existing educational movement based programme, Brain Gym, during the same experimental period.

The analyses of this particular group found that these children also achieved better results but not to the extent of the Nintendo group.

Along with the children's test scores improving, notable progress was also made in their behaviour and concentration. Derek Robertson, Learning and Teaching Scotland's development officer, has backed the role of computer games in improving kids' classroom performance.

"There was dramatic enhancement in their mental Maths ability in such a short period of time.

It also seemed to have a settling effect on the children,” the Daily Mail quoted him, as saying.

Insider domain name snatching probed

NEW YORK -28-Oct-2007.

The Internet's key oversight agency is investigating suspicions that insider information is being used to snatch desired domain names before an individual or business can register them.

The Security and Stability Advisory Committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers termed the practice "domain name front running" and likened it to a stock broker buying or selling shares ahead of a client's trade, in anticipation of a movement in price.

In the case of Internet addresses, many people who see a domain name available the first time they check find it already taken by the time they return to buy it.

That has led to suspicions that someone with access to search requests has been using the information to gauge interest in a domain name.

By buying the domain first, that person can then try to sell it to the interested party for a profit.

This is different from traditional domain name speculation because the buyer knows for sure that the address is of interest.

Although the practice has never been proven, the ICANN committee said the perception that it is happening "portrays an unfavourable image of the parties associated with the domain name registration process in specific, and of the domain name community in general."

The committee said it wants to prevent "perception from evolving to accepted wisdom."

The committee cited several ways front running may be happening, including the installation of viruses and other software programmed to collect such information and the use of unscrupulous third-party sites to check domain name availability.

Coincidence also was cited as a possibility.

ICANN is trying to gather evidence on whether it is occurring and, if so, whether policies or other measures are required to restrict the practice.

BSNL plans to share infrastructure with private operators

New Delhi : 28-Oct-2007.

State-owned telecom major BSNL is planning to share infrastructure with other service providers, a move which will enable the company to roll-out services faster and reduce cost in expanding the network.

"We are considering bilateral infrastructure sharing with private operators... we have already invited an Expression of Interest from infrastructure providers, which will be finalised very soon," BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Kuldeep Goyal told PTI in an interview.

The company had shared a few towers in Maharashtra with Bharti Airtel on a pilot basis, he said, adding this partnership can be extended to other circles also.

BSNL would take towers and other infrastructure on lease or rent in the proposed initiative. Bilateral infrastructure sharing with private operators across the country is also under consideration.

The telecom major wants to utilise passive telecom structures like towers, space and associated power system from infrastructure companies and telecom service providers on shared basis along with all related operations and maintenance activities in various locations of different telecom circles.

The company has about 30,000 towers across the country and operates all across the country, except in Delhi and Mumbai, with about 30 million mobile users.

According to industry estimates, there are about 180,000 telecom towers across India and there would be a need of over 400,000 towers by 2010. A tower costs around Rs 35 lakh.

This makes for a good business sense for existing operators to rent out towers to rivals.

Because of need of towers for expanding capacity, new entrants as well as existing operators will have to consolidate their infrastructure to generate value.

Sharing infrastructure would mean having a single tower where all operators can install their equipment.

For cleanliness

An operator can be fined Rs.5,000 by the DMRC for failing to keep the bus clean. The operator will have to submit a performance security of Rs.2 lakh, which can be cashed for poor performance.

The buses will have to adhere to a speed limit of 35 to 40 km within the city and 45 to 50 km on roads with three to four lanes.

Tata Steel posts 8% rise in profits

MUMBAI, OCTOBER 2007:

Tata Steel Ltd, the world’s sixth-largest steel maker, has posted a better-than-expected 8 per cent rise in second quarter net profit due to higher metal sales and foreign exchange gains.

Beating estimates, the net profit rose to Rs 1, 190.83 crore for the quarter ended September as compared with Rs 1,101.49 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Robust demand from construction and the auto industry and declining exports from China kept steel prices strong. The company is expected to gain significantly from this year’s $13 billion purchase of Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus Group.

Total income jumped 11.41 per cent to Rs 4,879.41 crore for the second quarter ended September from Rs 4379.51 crore in the year-ago period, the company said. For the first half of the current fiscal, the company reported a net profit of Rs 2, 412.94 crore against

Rs 2,054.90 crore in the same period in 2006-07.

Total income stood at Rs 9,223.11 crore for the six-month period ended September against
Rs 8,356.89 crore in the same period last year.

Analysts said the surprise was on the operating margins and realisation front, but they seem to have been negated by higher interest expenses.

The company also earned Rs 90.3 crore in foreign exchange gains during the quarter. Its interest costs quadrupled from a year earlier to Rs 202 crore.

Earnings per share of the company stood at Rs 19.55 for the quarter ended September 30 as against Rs 19.15 in the same period last year.

L&T profit soars 73%

Mumbai: Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has posted a 73 per cent leap in its net profit at Rs 348 crore for the quarter ended September against Rs 201.22 crore in the same quarter in the previous year.

L&T shares shot up by 12.4 per cent to Rs 3,885 on the BSE on Friday.

L&T’s gross sales and revenue for the second quarter has also jumped 47 per cent.

The company reported a Rs 5,574 crore in sales against Rs 3,804.30 crore for the same time last year. “We have an order backlog of Rs 4,400 crore till September.

So, we pick and choose the work. We are concentrating on a few work that is reflecting on our profitability,” he said. On the rupee appreciation, Deosthalee said there has not been “much impact”.

State Bank net profit rises 36%

KOLKATA: 28-Oct-2007.

The country’s largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), has reported a 36% growth in its net profit at Rs 1,611.42 crore for the quarter to September, compared to Rs 1,184.49 crore for the corresponding quarter last year.

Its net profit was buoyed by significant rise in both interest income and other income. A lower provision of Rs 85.71 crore for the quarter (Rs 321.30 crore) has also propelled the rise in profit.

Significantly, operating profit before provisions and contingencies stood at Rs 2,713.22 crore (Rs 2,112.53 crore), reflecting a 28.44% growth.

Interest income for the period under review grew 32% to Rs 11,616.28 crore (Rs 8,799.62 crore) while other income rose 42% to Rs 2,041.94 (Rs 1,437.69 crore).

For the half year period (April to September), SBI’s net profit grew 53.16% at Rs 3,037.23 crore (Rs 1,983.06 crore). Operating profit for the period was at Rs 5,074.68 crore (Rs 3,918.15 crore), grew 29.52%.

The bank has managed to improve its asset quality significantly over the period. Its gross non-performing assets ratio improved to 2.92% as on September 30, from 3.38% a year back.

Net NPA improved a shade to 1.63% (1.67%). However, the bank has provided Rs 489.84 crore during the half-year period towards loan loss provisions (Rs 287.66 crore). The provision cover has marginally come down to 45.15% (51.38% a year back), the bank said in a press statement issued on Saturday.

SBI mobilised Rs 6,023 crore of fresh capital during the half-year ended September by way of upper tier-II subordinated debt. It also raised $225 worth of foreign currency denominated resources to augment tier I capital.

The capital mobilisation exercises helped the bank improve its capital adequacy ratio (CAR) 12.85% as compared to a CAR of 12.63% a year back and a CAR of 12.34% on March 31.

As on September 30, SBI’s deposit base stood at Rs 4,84,114 crore from Rs 3,92,615 crore a year back.

The current and savings account (Casa) deposits grew to Rs 1,79,754 crore (Rs 1,57,456 crore). However, the bank said that its Casa ratio has fallen to 39.45% due to higher mobilisation of term deposits.

Gross advances grew to Rs 3,63,591 crore (Rs 2,88,078 crore). The average yield on advances improved substantially to 9.84% in September 2007 from 8.55% in September 2006. Due to the volume growth in advances and improvement in yield, interest income on advances went up significantly.

Bajaj alleges smear campaign by TVS

Mumbai October 28, 2007.

According to a Bajaj Auto release, two people employed with TVS Motors outlets in central and eastern India have been caught red handed distributing leaflets allegedly containing misleading and wrong information on Bajaj products.

Bajaj Auto alleges that due to better product initiatives taken by it, the competition have been put under 'severe pressure', driving them to completely unethical and undesirable actions.

Bajaj Auto dealers nabbed Santosh Kumar Rath and Sunil Kumar Sahu distributing leaflets stating Bajaj Auto is "phasing out the Bajaj Platina 100cc motorcycles and that the ongoing discount on the bike is a part of stock clearance sale".

Rath is an employee of Krishna TVS of Puri, Orissa, a Bajaj press statement said today.

Vimal Sumbly, national sales manager, Bajaj Auto, said: "The Platina has met with a tremendous response from consumers. We have no plan of discontinuing this hugely successful product.

We are monitoring these types of unethical practices by competitors very closely.

We see these activities as desperate measures by them to arrest the overwhelming success of our brands.

""We will not tolerate such unethical behavior on the part of the competition and we are planning to take police action at every location to bring this to a stop", he further added.

A TVS Motors spokesperson, said "TVS is unaware of any such action. The company will not indulge in any such activities and shall investigate the matter".

Bajaj also holds the 'competition' responsible for spreading incorrect news on the company's XCD125 motorcycle last week, that the bikes were being recalled for rectification.

An FIR has been filed against Krishna TVS by the Puri dealer of Bajaj Auto. Bajaj claims that it has received information that a similar vilification campaign is being carried out in Surat, Gujarat.Meanwhile, Bajaj claims its recently launched product – XCD125 has sold 65,000 units in the first fifty days of its launch, making it the segment's top selling bike.

In September the company sold 18,000+ units of the motorcycle.Following the positive response, the company plans to hike monthly production to 75,000 units in November – two months ahead of schedule.

Amit Nandi, general manager (marketing), Bajaj Auto, said: "Fifty per cent of XCD 125 volumes are coming from competition, a majority of them being 100cc users. XCD 125 is a compelling package that 100cc customers are finding very difficult to resist."

‘3G mobile services may be available by mid 2008’

New Delhi, Oct-2007.

Mobile users may be able to get the much awaited third generation services by middle of 2008, according to the Communications and IT Minister, Mr A. Raja.

Speaking at the 3G India Forum, the Minister said that spectrum will be released by the Defence by the year-end for both 3G and existing 2G cellular services.

Third generation services will enable mobile users to access high speed data services such as movie on demand and mobile TV on their handsets. However with operators showing more interest in getting 2G spectrum first, 3G services has been on the backburner.

The Department of Telecom is yet to finalise the policy for 3G services even though the telecom regulator had given its recommendations a year ago.

Mr Raja said that a key hurdle to the roll out of 3G services is the availability of spectrum.

“An institutional mechanism has been put in place for early vacation by the Defence.

We are hopeful that some spectrum for both 2G and 3G services will be vacated by the end of this year and this could pave the way for a roll out of 3G services by mid next year,” Mr Raja said.

The Minister had earlier said that spectrum would be available by November. However, Government sources said that the Defence was not willing to release spectrum unless an alternate medium for communication was ready.

They said the Defence might vacate 3G spectrum first because they were not using the band at present while their equipment was still working on the 2G frequencies.

Indian Gap supplier using child labour: report

London : 28-oct-2007

An Indian supplier to clothing retailer Gap Kids, one of the successful arm of the High Street giant Gap, has been found using child labour to produce garments, a media report said on Sunday.

In response, Gap on Sunday withdrew the garments involved from sale and ordered an investigation into reports that its garment suppliers in New Delhi have used child labour.

According to a report in The Sunday Observer, child workers, some as young as 10, have been found working in a textile factory in conditions close to slavery to produce clothes that appear destined for Gap Kids.

Gap, in a statement released from its headquarters in San Francisco, said: "it was unaware that clothing intended for the Christmas market had been improperly subcontracted to a sweatshop using child labour." It announced it had withdrawn the garments involved while it investigated breaches of the ethical code it imposed three years ago.

"After learning of this situation, we immediately took steps to stop this work order and to prevent the product (tens of thousands of the embroidered girls' blouses) from ever being sold in our stores. We are also convening a meeting of our suppliers where we will reinforce our prohibition on child labour," the statement said.

The hand-stitched tops, which would have been sold for about 20 pounds, were destined for shelves in Europe and the US in the next seven days, in time to be sold to Christmas shoppers.

Ponting’s take on India’s aggression

Melbourne: 24-Oct-2007.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting, just back from the ill-tempered one-day series against Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men, dared Team India to sustain its newly acquired aggression when it tours down under this summer.

Ponting said the Indians played the just-concluded series in an aggressive manner quite uncharacteristic of them and it would be interesting to see if they could sustain it in Australia.

“They made it pretty clear right at the start of the series that they were going to fight fire with fire but for us we know that’s generally not the way they play their cricket,” Ponting was quoted as saying by The Age.

“We’ve got a lot of cricket against them in the next few months so it will be interesting to see just how long that aggressive nature lasts,” he said.

After the home series against Pakistan, India will figure in a four-Test series against the host, followed by a triangular one-day series also involving Sri Lanka.

MacGill’s opinion

Leg-spinner Stuart MacGill parroted Ponting’s line and warned that the aggressive streak could backfire on India. “If you believe in yourself and you’re convinced the way you’re playing is right, it doesn’t really matter how you carry yourself,” he said.

“It’s always a danger if you’re trying to become someone you’re not because you’ve got to concentrate on a whole lot of things out on the field, not just bowling. I try and keep it as simple as I can because bowling to (Sachin) Tendulkar is hard enough,” said MacGill.

He believes it’s easy to be aggressive on home turf with thousands of spectators throwing their weight behind but it’s a different proposition abroad.

“It’s always easier when you’ve got a lot of support at home to ride your emotions. They only need to look around and know they’ve got a billion countrymen supporting them. I think you’ll find it doesn’t work for them if they are pretending.”

Ponting also had a word or two to say about S. Sreesanth who had frequent run-ins with the Australians.

“He generally does have a bit more aggression about him, a bit more body language than some of the other players,” Ponting said. “They’re fairly passive sort of people, the Indians, and he’s probably one from the left field.” he added.

The Australian captain also predicted that his side would have a clear edge.

“I think that’s always been their greatest challenge when they come to Australia, bowling us out twice,” he said. “They’ll bring a couple of spinners. Harbhajan (Singh) and (Murali) Kartik have been bowling really well and (Anil) Kumble will be there,” Ponting said.

Climate change could cause mass extinctions: report

24-Oct-2007.

(M&C) - A British report has predicted the predicted rise in global temperature for the next century could trigger mass extinctions.

Researchers from the University of York have said the range of temperatures are within the ranges of greenhouse phases in the early stages of the Earth's development when around 95 percent of the planet's plants and animals died out.

They discovered the five major areas of decline in species correspond with recurring cycles of global warming.

Dr Peter Mayhew of the University of York said, "Our results provide the first clear evidence that global climate may explain substantial variation in the fossil record in a simple and consistent manner."

"If our results hold for current warming, the magnitude of which is comparable with the long-term fluctuations in the Earth's climate, they suggest that extinctions will increase," he added.

Dr Mayhew told BBC News that "we could well be experiencing that in the next century - only a few human generations down the line. We need to know why temperatures and extinctions are linked in this way."

The research is published in "Proceedings of the Royal Society".

RBI working on guidelines for currency futures trading

MUMBAI: 24-Oct-2007.

The Reserve Bank is working on the regulatory guidelines for futures trading in currency but no time-frame has been fixed for its implementation.

"We have received several suggestions on currency futures from market participants. These will be studied and executed at an appropriate time," RBI Deputy Governor S Gopinath said at a conference on derivatives here on Wednesday.

The apex bank had set up a working group early this year to study the issue and had received suggestions from several quarters, she said.

However, she made it clear that there is "no time-frame" for implementing the proposal.

The currency futures trading will enable individuals and institutions to hedge and trade their Indian rupee risk on a transparent and equal basis.

In its 2007-08 annual monetary policy, the banking regulator had recommended the constitution of the working group for "an extensive consultation with the market participants to operationalise the proposal in line with the current legal and regulatory frame work".

Concerned over the increased volume of Non-Deliverable Forward Market (NDF) instruments in the market, the apex bank is understood to be thinking of allowing more trading instruments for market participants.

NDF is an instrument based on the rupee-dollar exchange, which is traded in international financial centers, where the RBI does not having much control over the instrument.

In order to improve the risk management mechanism of the participants, the apex bank had recently permitted banks and primary dealers to do transactions in single-entity Credit Default Swaps (CDS).

ADAG seeks SEBI probe into campaign against Reliance Power IPO

NEW DELHI:24-oct-2007.

The Anil Ambani group on Wednesday asked market regulator SEBI to probe a "disinformation campaign" launched by some "vested interests" against the planned Reliance Power IPO, estimated to raise up to Rs 12,000 crore.

"A formal complaint has been filed with SEBI to investigate the disinformation campaign launched against Reliance Power IPO," a Reliance ADA group spokesperson said in a statement.

"The suspects behind the disinformation campaign too have been named in the complaint filed with SEBI," the spokesperson said.

The call for probe comes a day after the group refuted allegations by 'REL Investors Forum' that the planned IPO of Reliance Power will erode the value for REL shareholders.

Reliance Power plans to come out with an IPO of 160 crore shares to part-finance 12 proposed power projects envisaging an estimated investment of nearly Rs 100,000 crore.

The IPO is being pegged as the biggest ever in India with total proceeds of about Rs 12,000 crore. Yesterday, a Reliance ADAG spokesperson had said that it was awaiting SEBI nod for the IPO even as some "vested interests" were trying to stall it.

The official said attempts were being made to engineer motivated litigation and the "campaign was motivated by frustration at continuing success and rising valuation of ADA Group".

The spokesperson said forged letters by Members of Parliament based on false and baseless allegations were also part of the vicious campaign.

UPA yet to agree to a compromise on N-deal: Chandrachudan

New Delhi, October 24, 2007.

The conviction of 10 Delhi policemen, including Assistant Commissioner of Police S.S. Rathi, in the Connaught Place shootout case is a trendsetter from the human rights perspective in as much as the court took a very strict view of right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.

Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar rejected the plea of the accused that policemen accused of similar killings of civilians in United Kingdom and the United States were let off and, therefore, they couldn’t be held guilty of murder.

“If there is any dilution of human rights in any other country, the same cannot become precedence in India, ASJ Kumar, who is scheduled to decide on Wednesday whether to give death penalty or life imprisonment to the convicts, said in his 66-page order.

“Even at the height of terrorism in India, law makers as well as the judiciary have upheld the high standards set by the Constitution of India in Article 21, which states that no person shall be deprived of his life of personal liberty except according to the procedure established by law.

“Even a hardened criminal and a terrorist enjoys this protection,” the ASJ said holding Rathi and nine other policemen guilty of killing businessman Pradeep Goyal and Jagjeet Singh in broad day light on March 31, 1997 in the heart of the capital.

The businessmen were killed because the accused had conspired to kill Md. Yaseen, the court said.

The accused had cited a case wherein the British Police had killed an innocent unarmed Brazilian national in London Tube train in the aftermath of serial blasts there. The British Prime Minister had regretted the incident but said that such incidents were possible in war on terror.

They had also given the example of an American case wherein police officers accused of killing a person was acquitted on the ground that he had taken out a purse from the pocket of his pant, which the policemen, thought to be a weapon.

However, the court said the American and British instances pointed out by the defence counsel would show that in both cases the police officers involved did not plant any weapon upon the persons killed by them.

UPA yet to agree to a compromise on N-deal: Chandrachudan

Thiruvananthapuram 24-oct-2007.

A consensus on the Indo-US nuclear deal, between the UPA Government and the Left parties, remains elusive with the former reluctant for a compromise, RSP leader and member of the UPA-Left committee on the nuclear deal T J Chandrachudan said on wednesday.

"The meetings are progressing like parallel rail tracks with no meeting point," Chandrachudan said here.

The Congress leadership was not showing statesmanship to overcome the crisis and continued to insist that it was a diplomatic, honourable and scientific deal from which the country stood to benefit, he said.

It seemed that the government had already signed the draft agreement with the IAEA and the United States and that was why the UPA had nothing new to offer at the panel met two days ago.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appeared to have given his word to the US and he was finding it difficult to back out, he said.

The Congress party had sought the Left's help to save the Prime Minister's credibility by agreeing to the deal. However, there had already been a definite erosion of credibility as the government had gone about the deal without taking the Left parties into confidence, he said.

The question now before the Congress was whether it wanted to save the secular government at the Centre or go ahead with the nuclear deal, he said.

"We expect that the Congress would put on hold the deal considering the need for retaining the Government. A snap election is not on our agenda. As far as we are concerned, our demand is that the government cancel the deal."

Mystery shrouds Air Deccan employee’s death at Delhi airport

New Dheli 24-oct-2007.

GRIEF-STRICKEN: Young Sanskriti’s mother Sheila Ambastha being consoled by a relative at their residence in Patna on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: An Air Deccan woman employee who was found dead in the domestic wing of Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Monday night was knocked down by a vehicle, an airline official said on Tuesday.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sanskriti Sinha, a senior technician with the airline, was found dead under mysterious circumstances around 10 p.m. between the airport’s taxi-way and the ramp area.

“The doctors who conducted the post-mortem examination on Tuesday said it was a case of accident. There was no jet blast as suggested by some people. The crime team that investigated the spot claimed that the accident was caused by a light vehicle,” said Air Deccan Security In-charge (Northern Region) Taufeeq Mohammad.“Negligence”

Accusing the Airports Authority of India of “negligence”, Mr. Mohammad said: “Sanskriti was walking from the engineering hangar to attend to an aircraft parked nearby. The unknown vehicle it seems violated traffic rules and took a right turn from there and hit her. It was a case of reckless driving because of which we lost one family member.”

The airline maintained that Sanskriti was in full compliance of all safety requirements and was wearing a high-visibility jacket.

For its part, Delhi International Airport (P) Limited said: “We run extensive training programmes for all vehicle drivers at the airport. In addition, periodic refresher programmes and random checks are initiated to ensure compliance to norms.

DIAL has also appointed airside monitoring inspectors to keep a vigil on safety compliance and violators of norms are strictly penalised. Dedicated vehicular movement lanes have been created for smooth flow of airside traffic. Speed limits for specific areas have been defined as per international norms.”

Mr. Mohammad said the airline’s security officials and police were carrying out further investigations.

A forensic team of the Delhi police studied the spot on Tuesday and lifted tyre marks for matching.

They are also trying to find out which vehicles were allowed in the area during the time of the accident to zero in on the vehicle involved.

Sanskriti’s family is based in Patna. Her uncle Kalyan Mohan, who lives in adjoining Faridabad, rejected rumours of suicide or foul play.

“From the nature of the injuries, it seems like a case of accident. She had to travel with my family to Jaipur last week but had to cancel it due to some work. We were on the verge of finalising her marriage.

Her engagement was to take place in Bangalore this week,” he said.

Sanskriti’s body, along with two relatives and as many employees of Air Deccan, was flown to Patna on Tuesday evening.Family’s charge

S. Balchand reports from Patna:

Sanskriti’s family is upset with Air Deccan for not keeping them informed of the developments.
Her father Arun Kumar Sinha said it was his daughter’s roommate who informed him about the incident and requested him to rush to Delhi. Fifteen minutes later, the Air Deccan Special Manager and a lady captain told him that Sanskriti met with an accident on the ramp and that she died on the spot.

Mr. Sinha and his son Guddu say the Air Deccan officials did not contact them thereafter. In the absence of any information from the authorities, the family has been relying on the media and their relatives for information.

Mr. Sinha wondered why no one noticed the accident for so long: if someone had acted in time, she could have been saved.

“No one is telling us why the mishap occurred and how? Why is it that the culprit hasn’t been nabbed and the vehicle identified? From what we infer, the tyre marks were those of a small vehicle,” Guddu maintained.

Subramanian Swamy for dismantling of Sethusamudram experts panel

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking dismantling of the 10-member experts committee on the Sethusamudram canal project alleging "anti-Hindu" and "anti-Ram Setu bias" among some of the panel's members, including its chairman S Ramachandran.

Swamy also sought junking of the panel on the grounds that it did not have any reputed archaeologist or scientists from reputed bodies like the National Institute of Ocean Technology or the Geological Survey of India.

The panel was constituted by the central government to re-examine the feasibility of implementing the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project, off the Tamil Nadu coast, without damaging Adam's Bridge or Ram Setu, which is revered by many Hindus as the bridge referred to in the "Ramayana".

Swamy, who submitted his petition to the apex court's registry, is likely to apprise an apex court bench on Wednesday about his pending petition and plead for its urgent hearing.

The government had constituted the panel on October 5 in accordance with its assurance to the Supreme Court on September 14 that it would review the project to build a shorter sea route around the Indian peninsula, without damaging the Ram Setu.

The government had given the assurance while taking back an offending affidavit, which doubted the existence of Lord Ram and events depicted in the "Ramayana".

Besides Madras University Vice-Chancellor S Ramachandran, the panel includes Delhi University history professor RS Sharma, Aqua Culture Foundation of India president M Sakthivel and Central Pollution Control Board's former chairman Dileep K Biswas.

The other members of the panel include Kolkata-based Zoological Survey of India's former director JRD Alfred and Nagpur-based National Environment Engineering Research Institute director SR Wate.

Citing instances of alleged inherent anti-Hindu or anti-Ram Setu bias among the members, Swamy said that history professor Sharma "is an admittedly anti-Hindu Marxist historian and has appeared as witness in the Ramajanmabhoomi case to rubbish the claims of a Hindu structure underlying the demolished Babri mosque in Ayodhya".

"He has actually queried the historicity of Shri Rama and Shri Krishna. Thus his views on the project must naturally be one-sided," he added.

Referring to panel chairman Ramachandran's "public views" on Ram Setu, Swamy said that during adjudication of the matter by the Madras High Court in June, the professor had issued a press statement negating Hindus' belief on Ram Setu.

"We, the scientists having expertise in the field of geology and oceanography confirm that Adam's Bridge is purely of barrier islands formed due to natural process," Swamy quoted Ramachandran as saying in his press statement.

"Having intimately associated with a particular exclusive view, Prof Ramachandran must be disqualified from the committee," Swamy added.

He also objected to the inclusion of members like Sakhtivel, Biswas and Alfred in the committee on the ground that they assessed the environmental impact of the project earlier and gave it a green signal turning a blind eye to the fact that it would destroy the fragile ecology of the area.

Ram Setu is believed by many Hindus to be the bridge built by Lord Ram's army of monkeys and bears to reach Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, who was abducted by demon king Ravana.

ISRO should not insist on Merchiston land: Achuthanandan

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): 24-oct-2007

ISRO should not insist on setting up its Space Science Insitute on the land purchased from a private party as the state government has promised to allot 200 acres of land for the purpose, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister said he found "no reason" why ISRO was "insisting" on setting up the institute on the 80 acres of land purchased from an individual at Ponmudi near here.

The government was not responsible for the agreement between Xavie Mano Mathew, the owner of Merchiston Estate at Ponmudi, and the ISRO, the Chief Minister said.

The government was prepared to provide a suitable site to the ISRO for the institute, he added.
The deal between ISRO and Merchiston Estate owner had run into trouble as the government held that the land was vested with the government under the Ecologically Fragile Land (EFL) Act.

Salman Khan appears before Rajasthan HC

Jodhpur, October 24, 2007

Actor Salman Khan on Wednesday appeared before the registry of the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur in connection with the Chinkara poaching case.

He also marked his presence before a lower court of the city hearing another case of hunting a black buck and a case under Arms Act against him.

The lower court has fixed November 23 as the next date of hearing of both the cases.

Salman, who arrived here last night, appeared before Mahendra Singh, Deputy Registrar of the Rajasthan High Court and marked his attendance by signing on his case file.

The high court had on August 31 directed him to personally appear before it today.

The actor's counsel, HM Saraswat, said Salman's revision petition against the decision of District and Sessions Court in Jodhpur upholding the five years jail sentence will now be taken up in due course.

"High Court will now hear his case in due course and Salman need not mark his presence before it till his turn comes for hearing," Saraswat said, adding the court's registry has recorded his client's presence as per the direction of the single bench.

The Bench of Justice HR Panwar admitted his revision petition and suspended the five years sentence in the poaching case.

Salman was released from Jodhpur jail after furnishing a personal bond of Rs 1,00,000 with two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.

The case pertains to the poaching of a Chinkara at Ujiyala Bhakhar near Ghoda Farm on September 28,1998. Chinkara is a protected animal under the Wild Life Protection Act.

Two more cases against the actor are pending before the lower court.

UN envoy: India should step up pressure on Myanmar

NEW DELHI: 23-oct-2007.

UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari is holding up China as a model for India to put pressure on the military junta in Myanmar for democracy and national reconciliation.

On Monday, Gambari met foreign secretary ShivShankar Menon for discussions on the next steps that should be taken on Myanmar. He meets foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday.

Gambari will be taking the line that while China, which is the major weapons supplier to Myanmar, had publicly worked with the UN to facilitate his visit to the isolated nation, India has not yet stepped up to the table.

Last week, British junior minister for this region Mark Malloch Brown told the government the same thing: that the world expects more from India because it's a democracy, unlike China. Gambari was quoted as saying, "China has been very helpful to the secretary-general and to me personally... by getting consent of the government of Myanmar (for) my last visit during the crisis.

The Chinese authorities continue to do more to move the authorities in Myanmar along the path which can only be sustained by dialogue... between the government and opposition." India's line was clarified by PM Manmohan Singh. "We have to recognise that Myanmar is our next-door neighbour and sometimes it doesn't serve the objective you have in mind by going public with condemnations.

In dealing with this, we need to cooperate with the government in Myanmar regardless of its colour," he said. But the PM hastened to add, "Let me say that our position on the basic issue of political reforms is never in doubt." While India has refused to go down the sanctions route, it is working with international community on a set of incentives that could help the Tatmadaw take democratic steps on board.

According to sources, India has also been quietly working on the Tatmadaw to be more open to democratic movements. A senior government official observed that the demand for sanctions is directly proportional to the country's physical distance from Myanmar.

Viagra may turn you deaf

22-oct-2007.

Drugs like Viagra, which successfully take care of erectile dysfunction in men, may have an unwanted side effect in the form of sudden hearing loss, according to an advisory released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Other erectile dysfunction drugs implicated in this adverse effect are Cialis and Levitra.

The erectile dysfunction drugs including Viagra belong to a family of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Another drug of the same class, but used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is Revatio. The FDA said the latter would also carry warnings about possible deafness after consuming it.Pulmonary hypertension is a condition where persistent high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs leads to right heart failure and eventually death.

The FDA approved changes in the labels of the above four drugs after case report in the April 2007 issue of the Journal of Laryngology & Otology detailed sudden hearing loss in a man taking Viagra. After examining the FDA’s Adverse Events Reporting System, the agency found 29 postmarketing reports of sudden hearing loss connected to PDE5 inhibitors.

According to the FDA;* Sudden hearing loss was also accompanied by ringing in the ears, vertigo, or dizziness* In most cases hearing loss was limited to one ear* Hearing loss was partial or complete* In one third of cases hearing loss was temporary"Although no causal relationship has been demonstrated, the strong relationship between the use of these drugs and sudden hearing loss in these cases warrants revisions to the product labeling for this drug class," the FDA said.Viagra is chemically sildenafil and is best known for treating erectile dysfunction.

The drug was initially marketed as a high blood pressure and angina relieving medication, but quickly acquired superstar status because of its ability to treat erectile dysfunction in a satisfactory manner.Produced by Pfizer, the drug is a blockbuster in this category.

While other beneficial effects have been attributed to Viagra, it continues to be the number one drug in the ED category.According to the National Institutes of Health, some side effects associated with Viagra include:

* Headache
* Upset stomach
* Diarrhea
* Dizziness or lightheadedness
* Flushing (feeling of warmth)
* Stuffy nose

In severe cases the drugs has also been known to cause sudden vision loss. Although the FDA did not refer to this, it did warn users they might experience sudden loss of their hearing capacity.

"Patients taking Revatio for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension who experience sudden changes in their hearing should promptly contact their health care provider for further evaluation.

However, patients taking Cialis, Levitra or Viagra for the treatment of ED who experience sudden hearing loss should immediately stop taking the drug and also seek prompt medical attention," the FDA said. For more information,

Music piracy site closed after U.K., Dutch raids

October 23, 2007

British and Dutch police shut down one of the world's largest sources of illegal prerelease music on Tuesday and arrested a 24-year-old man.

The raids in Amsterdam and the northeast English city of Middlesbrough followed a two-year investigation into a members-only Web site, which allowed users to upload and download albums before their release.

Prerelease leaks have become one of the most damaging forms of piracy for the music industry which is struggling with falling sales. Recorded music sales have fallen by more than a third in the last six years, the industry says.

An estimated 180,000 members paid "donations" via debit or credit cards for OiNK's catalog of music and other media.

Industry experts said the site had provided access to more than 60 albums before their release this year alone.

"OiNK was central to the illegal distribution of prerelease music online," said Jeremy Banks, the head of the antipiracy unit at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which helped police with their investigation.

"This was not a case of friends sharing music for pleasure. This was a worldwide network that got hold of music they did not own the rights to and posted it online."

Prerelease piracy is regarded as particularly damaging because it leads to unauthorized mixes or unfinished versions of artists' recordings appearing months before they are meant to.

Often it is those in the industry, who get promotional or demonstration copies of albums before their release, who are involved in leaking them to file-sharing sites.

British police said they arrested the 24-year-old on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and infringement of copyright law. Dutch police seized servers and other computer equipment.

"While some might view this type of act as a victimless crime, there's no such thing," said Chief Superintendent Mark Braithwaite of the Cleveland police in the U.K.

"The cost of an enterprise such as this will be added to the cost of any legitimate purchases further down the line."

Artists are experimenting with new ways of distributing their music to fans, including providing it free over the Internet. British band Radiohead released its latest album on the Web and invited fans to pay a donation to download it.

A raid in Sweden last year shut down an Internet site that police said was a major source of music and film piracy.

CDMA, GSM can co-exist: AUSPI

Mumbai October 23, 2007

Field trials on the co-existence of CDMA and GSM in the 1900 MHz band has proved that there is no interference between the two technologies.

Association of United Service Providers of India (AUSPI), the CDMA operators' body, conducted the trials in Hyderabad over a period of several weeks.

The results would lay to rest "the longstanding debate on interference-related issues between the two technologies under 1900 MHz band.

The results of the field demo showed that both systems CDMA and wideband CDMA systems in Personal Communication Systems 1900 (PCS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System 2.1 GHz (UMTS) bands can co-exist, " AUSPI said in a statement issued today.

The outcome of the study will also help the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) take the right decisions on spectrum allocations given the spectrum crunch and the ever-growing subscriber base in the country, the release added.

This would also translate into "huge savings in the spectrum" being used by telecom service providers in the country, it said. Technical experts from the wireless planning and co-ordination (WPC) cell, telecom engineering cell and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) supervised the trials.

AUSPI members, including CDMA operators Tatas and Reliance Communications, CDMA technology provider Qualcomm and handset manufacturer ZTE Corporation participated in the trials.

Bajaj brothers fight it out at CLB

NEW DELHI: 23 Oct 2007

It was a war between two brothers where both sides had come fully armed — with documents and lawyers though. On Monday, when warring Bajaj brothers — Rahul and Shishir — resumed their legal battle in the Company Law Board, everyone expected a tough exchange.

And the signs were visible from the corridors which was full of bags containing documents. While the lawyers — both sides added up to at least two dozen — only opened some of the bags, with all sorts of initials on them, they are expected to be emptied over the next few days when arguments continue.

As the battle for division of the Bajaj family business empire started, Rahul’s counsel Ashok Desai said the group patriarch had last week made an offer to his younger sibling, who turned it down. Desai also said that Shishir had terminated the memoradum of understanding between the brothers to divide the group.

This was opposed by counsel appearing for Shishir, saying it was Rahul who first ended the MoU by filing a suit before the Bombay High Court. Shishir’s side filed a rejoinder before CLB for inspecting documents of some group companies. Reacting to it, Desai said the Shishir group had no right to file a petition under Section 397, 398, 399 and 402 of the Companies Act, 1956, alleging mismanagement of the company and oppression of facts.

“They run their own companies... (and) cannot say that they have mismanaged their own entity,” Desai argued , highlighting that Shishir has filed a case against Bajaj Sevashram, of which he is the chairman. He also pointed out that Shishir was seeking relief against some trusts and employee relief funds of Bajaj Hindustan, Bajaj Electricals and Bajaj Auto.

Moreover, Desai alleged that the Shishir camp sold some shares belonging to a few welfare trusts and it was against Indian Penal Code. He added many group firms such as Rishav Trading and Bajaj Trading were wrongly included in the petition to improve his share in the business.

“You inflated the figure of the family’s holding to 40%. This is not an oppression (Sec 397) and mismanagement (Sec 398) petition,” Desai said. This was opposed by lawyers representing Shishir on the ground that the trust and holding companies had crucial stake in the group companies. “We have to run our business.

If I am ousted and thrown out from the board of directors of Bajaj Sevashram, then I will lose control over my company (Bajaj Hindustan ),” Shishir’s counsel said.

Reliance Power IPO awaiting Sebi nod: ADAG

New Delhi October 23, 2007

Reliance ADA Group today said it is awaiting Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) nod for the initial public offering (IPO) of group company Reliance Power even as some "vested interests" were trying to stall the stake sale plan.

"A vicious campaign of disinformation (is) underway by vested industrial interests to stall the Reliance Power IPO," a Reliance ADAG spokesperson said in a statement. The official said attempts were being made to engineer motivated litigation and the "campaign was motivated by frustration at the continuing success and rising valuation of the ADA Group".

Reliance Power's IPO was awaiting Sebi approval in normal course, he added. The spokesperson said forged letters by Members of Parliament based on false and baseless allegations were also part of the vicious campaign.

The reaction came after REL Investors Forum, an association of investors in Anil Ambani-led Reliance Energy, today alleged that the planned IPO of Reliance Power will erode the value for REL shareholders.

Reliance Power plans to come out with an IPO of 160 crore shares to part-finance 12 proposed power projects envisaging an estimated investment of nearly Rs 1,00,000 crore. The IPO is being pegged as the biggest-ever in India with total proceeds of about Rs 12,000 crore.

Don't go abroad, Ramadoss urges AIIMS docs

New Delhi, October 23, 2007

Even as a few dozen doctors and passing out students of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi apply for foreign jobs, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday urged them to stay back in the country and serve fellow people.

"Don't go outside India. Serve the nation as they (people) need your services the most," Ramadoss said.

"Stay put in India and if you are going to foreign countries for further training, then finish it and come back," he said as he gave away the degree to 749 doctors and nurses at the much delayed 35th convocation ceremony of the AIIMS.

Some 25 graduates from AIIMS and some doctors have applied for jobs abroad and a huge number of nursing graduates annually go out of the country for jobs that draw higher emoluments.

The minister said the country has rolled out a flagship National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to strengthen the healthcare facility in rural India and the doctors and nurses passing out of AIIMS should help in the success of the scheme.

"The country needs your participation to achieve success. AIIMS is the best institute of the country, and I need your support."

"The six AIIMS like institutes are coming up in different states and I urge the pass-out doctors and nurses and eminent panel of senior doctors of the AIIMS to help us in providing technical know-how."

"I know, you are the best. Help us in setting up six AIIMS like institutes," Ramadoss said.

After a long wait, Ramadoss, who is also the president of AIIMS, awarded degrees to 749 doctors and nurses who have graduated in different streams since May 2005.

Of the 749 degrees awarded on Tuesday, 63 are PhD degrees, 186 MD (Doctorate in Medicine) degrees, and 103 are MBBS degrees. Also, 127 nursing graduates received their degrees.
These doctors and nurses had to wait for long for their degrees as Ramadoss had not signed them.

AIIMS is the top government-run medical college of the country and over 8,000 patients per day are treated at the hospital affiliated to it.

Presiding over the ceremony, Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said: "We hope you all work in India. You all should work for a healthier and happier India."

TN House passes minority quota bill

CHENNAI: 23 Oct 2007

An ordinance issued by the Tamil Nadu government last month reserving 3.5% of the seats in state and private educational institutions and government jobs for backward class Christians and Muslims, received the assembly’s sanction on Monday.

The Madras high court has so far refused to stay the ordinance unlike the quota bill for Muslims in schools and universities passed by the Andhra Pradesh assembly that was stayed by the Supreme Court last month.

Reservation under the Tamil Nadu Backward Class Christians and Backward Class Muslims Bill is within the 30% reservation for 142 different backward classes in the state.

The new law comes into force with retrospective effect from September 15. The ordinance was promulgated three days earlier.

"It’s a golden day in the history of the state assembly and social justice," said chief minister M Karunanidhi, who introduced the bill, which was passed by voice vote.

Karunanidhi said the bill was based on the report submitted by Tamil Nadu Second Backward Classes Commission headed by J A Ambasankar in 1985. The ruling DMK’s allies — Congress, Left and PMK — welcomed the Bill.

US gets first Indian-American state governor

WASHINGTON 21-Oct-2007.

The son of Punjabi immigrants won an election in Louisiana to become the United States' first Indian-American state governor, according to election results Sunday.

With the win, Piyush "Bobby" Jindal, 36, a Republican member of the House of Representatives, also becomes the United States' youngest governor, and the first minority to hold the post since the 1970s.

"My mom and dad came to this country in the pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened? They found the American dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana," Jindal told a cheering crowd after he claimed victory.

Jindal said his election win would give a "fresh start" to the state, which is still struggling to rebuild two years after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of New Orleans and cast a harsh spotlight on racial inequities in the south.

"In America and here in Louisiana, the only barrier to success is your willingness to work hard and play by the rules," said the new governor-elect, promising to implement more rigorous ethics laws.

Republican elders in Washington said Jindal's election was a welcome election victory at a time when the party appeared to be losing public support.

Bobby Jindal's positive message of economic opportunity, ethics reform, and tough action against crime clearly resonated with Louisiana voters," said Republican National Committee chairman Mike Duncan, in a statement.

With the party hard-pressed in several key upcoming election races, he said Jindal's victory gives Republicans a template for future election success, and sends the message that "Republican candidates who are true to our party's fundamental principles win at the ballot box," Duncan said.

Jindal, who won 53 percent of the vote with more than 90 percent of votes counted according to The Advocate newspaper in the state capital Baton Rouge, is to be sworn in as governor in January.

In 2004, Jindal became the second Indian-American to be elected to the US Congress. Some analysts blamed discrimination for his narrow 2003 loss in the Louisiana governorship race to Kathleen Blanco, who is white.

But this year's race was changed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina which devastated much of New Orleans and transformed the political landscape.

Blanco did not contend the race following a backlash at her administration's response to the disaster and there were no other strong opponents on the field.

Jindal also benefited from a low turnout of African-American voters, who traditionally back Democrats, and won largely based on strong support from whites in the southern state, analysts told the Advocate.

Jindal, who as a boy adopted his nickname "Bobby" from a character on The Brady Bunch television show, converted to Roman Catholicism from Hinduism as a teenager and has moved rapidly up the political ladder.

An Oxford University-educated Rhodes scholar, he was appointed secretary of Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals at the age of 24.

After a brief stint in Washington, he returned home as the youngest president of the University of Louisiana System before being appointed a top policy advisor in the federal department of Health and Human Services.

He refused to admit that ethnicity was a factor in his failure to carry the state in 2003. But he worked on his image, donning cowboy boots and jeans and spending time in fundamentalist Christian churches.

Jindal was born and raised in Baton Rouge after his parents came to the United States so that his mother, pregnant with him at the time, could continue her graduate work in nuclear physics.

His father, an engineer, was one of nine children in a poor rural family in Punjab.

Dollar sinks on US economy fears

LONDON 22-oct-2007.

The ailing US dollar hit another record low versus the euro on Friday as the market fretted over gloomy US economic prospects and G7 finance ministers gathered in Washington, dealers said.
In early European trade, the euro jumped to a record 1.4319 dollars, the highest level since the single currency's creation in 1999.

That was an increase of 14 percent over the past year and 22 percent up on its initial rate of 1.1665 dollars set on December 31, 1998.

In late European deals, it stood at 1.4250 dollars, down from 1.4297 late on Thursday.

The dollar slid to to 114.96 yen, from 115.62 late on Thursday.

The dollar's dwindling value has been thrown into the limelight ahead of the gathering of Group of Seven (G7) finance ministers and central bank chiefs in Washington on Friday which was due to start at 1715 GMT.

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson continues to voice confidence in a "strong dollar" but the currency has declined sharply in the past year.

Nervousness about the health of the global economy and the meeting also pushed up the yen, which is often sold by speculators to fund risky "carry trade" investments in high-yielding assets.

Dealers said players were betting that G7 chiefs would refrain from taking any action to try to bolster the sagging dollar despite growing concern in Europe about the strong euro's effect on eurozone exporters.

"There is already some speculation that officials will attempt to prop up the dollar at the G7 finance ministers' meeting," said Julian Jessop of Capital Economics.

"But we expect this meeting to be a non-event for the markets."

In recent years, G7 officials have refrained from any direct signal to impact currencies.

While French and Italian politicians have voiced concerns about the euro's rise, Germany and other eurozone countries appear more relaxed about it.

On the sidelines of a European Union summit meeting in Portugal French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he saw a consensus among EU leaders that some currencies were too weak ahead of the Washington G7 meeting.

"Not everybody considers that the euro is too high but everybody considers that other currencies are too weak," Sarkozy told reporters.

The French president did not specify which currencies he had in mind. Analysts said, however, coordinated action by the G7 was unlikely because the strength of the euro reflected the good health of the eurozone economies.

"The strong euro reflects robust growth in the eurozone, while concerns over the outlook for the US economy grew" after higher than expected weekly jobless claims, said Hiroshi Sakurai, analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities.

The market was also keeping an eye on oil prices, which hit a record high 90.07 dollars per barrel in New York on concerns about tensions between Turkey and Iraq, dealers said.
In recent weeks, the dollar has been undermined by the increased prospect of another US interest rate cut later this month, after the Federal Reserve slashed its key rate last month by a half-point to 4.75 percent.

Lower borrowing costs in the United States reduce interest in the dollar and boost the attractiveness of the euro.

In late European trade Friday, the euro changed hands at 1.4250 dollars, against 1.4297 dollars late Thursday, 163.82 yen (165.32), 0.6963 pounds (0.6992) and 1.6709 Swiss francs (1.6721).
The dollar stood at 114.96 yen (115.62) and 1.1726 Swiss francs (1.1693).

The pound was at 2.0470 dollars (2.0444).

In London, the price of gold slipped to 763.00 dollars per ounce at the evening fixing from 764.15 dollars late Thursday.

'Indian family firms respond well to opportunities'

BANGALORE, India — 22-oct-2007.

Family-run companies that dominate Indian business have been quick to tap emerging market opportunities, but concerns remain over governance standards, Moody's said Monday.

Seventeen of the 30 companies on the Mumbai stock exchange's main Sensex index are family-controlled, signalling their powerful hold on the economy, the US-based credit assessor said in a study it conducted with its Indian unit.

Moody?s and local firm ICRA examined governance in 32 companies in 16 prominent family-controlled Indian businesses including conglomerates run by the Tata and Birla groups.

"Moody?s has observed globally that family-controlled companies can face specific corporate governance challenges," it said, listing fewer checks and balances besides leadership transition risks and conflicting market strategies.

The report said Indian family companies had responded well to the opportunities available in the fast-growing and liberalising economy, which is expanding at an annual pace of nine percent.

"Although Indian corporate governance practices are improving, this largely reflects regulation of listed companies, particularly regarding checks and balances such as composition of the board of directors and the operations of audit committees," said Chetan Modi, Moody's India director.

"Governance issues persist in areas not covered by regulation," added Modi.

He cited indications that "succession planning is not fully deliberated with independent directors."

"There is often insufficient transparency on ownership and control, related-party transactions and the group's overall financial position," Modi said.

The report also noted that despite regulations regarding independent board members, families retain significant control of listed companies, making it difficult to ascertain the "true independence" of directors.

Many family-run Indian companies date back to the late 1800s and benefited from special treatment and subsidies that made them near monopolies after British rule ended in 1947, helped by strict controls barring competition.

That changed in 1991 when India opened up the economy and lifted four decades of socialist-style rules shackling private enterprise and foreign investment, but family firms remain a force to reckon in businesses ranging from oil and steel to autos and telecoms.

Family disputes have beset many business groups, with the giant conglomerate Reliance Industries splitting in 2005 following a bitter feud between the Ambani brothers Mukesh and Anil after the death of their father and group founder Dhirubhai three years earlier.

Domain names in Indian languages soon

NEW DELHI: 22-Oct-2007.

India is all set to join the global bandwagon of local language domain names. Soon you will be able to own domain names in Hindi, Tamil, Sanskrit, Bengali, Punjabi and some other Indian languages.

For trademark owners, the initial registration (called the sunrise period) is expected to open in January 2008.

Registration for individual owners, that is, land rush, will begin around March, 2008. Called IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names), these are popular in Europe (Russia, Germany) and Asia (Singapore , China, Japan, Korea). In some of these countries, IDNs registrations per month surpass those in English. “It will be one of the most complex roll outs of IDNs in the world.

Other countries have only one or two languages but we have about 22 languages in 11 scripts. We plan to offer IDNs in 5-6 languages in the first phase which will begin next year,” said National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) additional CEO Rajesh Aggarwal.

NIXI had earlier launched the .in domain which crossed 3 lakh registrations on Friday. The IDNs, on the other hand, are in the test phase right now. The guidelines for roll out are being framed by the NIXI along with IT ministry, C-DAC and Internet Service Providers Association of India.

“The same letter may exist both in Tamil and Hindi. Also, within a language it can be represented visually through different set of Unicode characters. We are trying to make the IDNs phishing and spoofing proof,” Mr Aggarwal added. Currently, any letter in a Devanagiri, Gurmukhi or any other regional script font can be created visually using different codes.

Simply put, if Ram.com is created using one script, the same can be created visually by using a different set of codes. It may lead to a rise in phishing or spoofing of identities. But NIXI is drafting a counter policy on the same.

“To counter this, we will block alternate identities of the same name, which can be created by different codes, except the original identity for every user. We will have a scientific formula on how the visual representation of each character in the domain name will be made.

Also, we will have a simple dispute resolution policy,” he adds. ISPs are welcoming the move as IDNs have been very popular in helping penetrate internet across the world. “It will serve as an important tool to promote rural internet penetration.

It makes sense to have a domain name in Devanagiri if the website content is in Hindi language. It’s a welcome step,” says Jasjit Sawhney, CEO Net4.

Tamil IDNs are already supported by Singapore along with Chinese, Japanese , Korean and Spanish languages. Critics of IDNs, however, say that if there are thousands of languages across it becomes difficult for trademark owners to register each and every identity.

To boost offtake, NIXI has this also dropped prices of .in domains. Prices have fallen from Rs 4,000 to Rs 200, thus increasing registration by 10 times. From 300 per day, .in is now seeing almost 3,000 registrations daily. NIXI plans to cross four lakh .in registrations by 2007 end.

Bollywood star Dutt could head to jail Monday: lawyer

MUMBAI 22-oct-2007.

Bollywood bad boy Sanjay Dutt, who is out on bail from a six-year sentence for illegal arms possession due to a technicality, could be back in jail as early as Monday, his lawyer said.

India's Supreme Court agreed to his conditional release in August after the anti-terror court in Mumbai that jailed him failed to provide the actor with a copy of its judgement.

"Dutt has now been called on Monday and is likely to receive his copy," Farhana Shah, one of Dutt's lawyers, told AFP Saturday.

The Supreme Court has ordered Dutt to turn himself in when his lawyers receive a copy of the judgement.

Dutt appeared in court Saturday but was told to return after the weekend, the lawyer added.

The hugely popular star was sentenced on July 31 to serve six years for possessing illegal weapons received from the plotters of the 1993 Mumbai bombings, which killed 257 people and wounded 800.

Dutt has always maintained his innocence, arguing he purchased a Kalashnikov assault rifle to protect his family from sectarian violence.

During his temporary reprieve Dutt has been busy completing his movie contracts, with six films in production and some 750 million rupees (18.4 million dollars) of Bollywood money riding on him.

The son of a politically prominent Hindu father and a Muslim mother honoured for her acting, Dutt's turbulent off-screen life has also been wracked by drug abuse and two failed marriages.

Is N-deal off or on, Left will ask UPA today

New Delhi, October 21, 2007

The UPA-Left political committee on the India-US civilian nuclear agreement will meet on Monday for the fifth time.

With the government softening its stand on the bilateral treaty and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh conveying to US President George W Bush that India cannot proceed with it, this could well be the last meeting of the 15-member panel.

At Monday's meeting, the Left parties hope to formally hear from the UPA that the deal has been frozen. CPM leaders, however, were not willing to comment on the government's position on the deal before the meeting.

"We have heard about the change in the government's stand from the media. We hope that it would also be conveyed to us formally when we meet (on Monday)," said a CPM leader on Sunday. On Saturday, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan made it clear that the Left would want to hear in no uncertain terms from the UPA that the deal is off.

That kind of an iron-clad confirmation is needed to end the almost three-month-old controversy, he said.Meanwhile, PTI quoted CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury as saying in Bangalore on Sunday that the UPA-Left committee is expected to come out with its findings on the deal after Diwali.Much has changed since October 9, when the committee last met.

On October 12, at the HT Summit, the prime minister said that there was more to life than the nuclear deal and that he was not heading a one-issue government. He further added that the Congress-led UPA was determined to complete its five-year mandate.

India beats Australia by seven wickets

20-oct-2007

INDIA beat Australia by seven wickets overnight in a one-off Twenty20 match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai thanks to a hard-hitting 63 by Gautam Gambhir.

Earlier Ricky Ponting's 76 propelled Australia to 5-166 from their 20 overs.

The Australian captain's 53-ball knock at least provided his bowlers with something to defend on a typically barmy evening in Mumbai.

Spin duo Harbhajan Singh (1-17 off four overs) and Murali Kartik (0-27 off four overs) played key roles in slowing down Australia's momentum in the middle overs.

Ponting was the only batsmen to reach a decent total with Michael Clarke next best on 25 not out.

The home fans revelled in the first Twenty20 international in India, the frenetic format meaning they barely paused for breath in supporting their world-beating lineup.

Security was beefed up following the repeated racial abuse of Andrew Symonds and CCTV cameras installed in the stadium.

But there wwere no definitive signs of trouble despite Symonds (20) again being heavily booed on his way out to bat.

Scores

AUSTRALIA 5-166 in 20 overs (Ricky Ponting 76, Michael Clarke 25no, Andrew Symonds 20),

INDIA 3-167 in 18.1 overs (Gautam Gambhir 63, Robin Uthappa 35, Yuvraj Singh 31no)

RComm edges out GSM operators in spectrum race

Mumbai, Oct. 19:
Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications (R-Com) has received the department of telecom’s (DoT) approval to launch nationwide GSM services.

R-Com now offers CDMA services in 20 circles and GSM in eight circles.

R-Com has been allowed to offer the new services under the DoT’s existing unified access service licence.

The DoT permission, therefore, fulfils Ambani’s vision of offering both GSM and CDMA services to the subscriber.

More than a year ago, Ambani had said there would be an enhanced focus on GSM, even as the company would remain “technology neutral’’.

As part of the GSM focus, he had also expressed interest in acquiring Hutchison Essar, which was later taken over by the Vodafone group.

Analysts said though R-Com will be entering a crowded arena, the GSM roll-out is likely be fast paced as its towers are already in place.

Sources close to the company said the launch of nationwide GSM services would not shift the focus away from CDMA. In July, R-Com strengthened its ties with Qualcomm Inc, the CDMA technology provider.

J&K teacher 'killed' by soldiers, inquiry ordered

SRINAGAR:
The Army has arrested a soldier for allegedly killing a teacher in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir as massive protest demonstrations sparked by the incident continued in the area for the second day on Saturday.

The teacher, Abdul Rashid Mir, was killed accidentally by a bullet shot from Mohammad Tariq's service rifle after he was stopped by security personnel at a check point to ascertain his identity, Army sources said.

Tariq was put in military custody following his arrest pending an investigation into the incident, they said. The incident resulted in massive protest demonstrations in the area.

Although officials said there were no reports of injuries so far during the rallies, reports reaching here claim that at least a dozen people, including six policemen, were injured in the clashes between the police and the protestors.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the Army in connection with the killing on the basis of a complaint filed by the father of the deceased, DIG Baramulla Range B Srinivas said, adding the District Magistrate has also ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Army has already ordered a court of inquiry to look into the circumstances leading to Mir's death, a teacher guide, in Chowkibal area of Kupwara on Friday.

Protests were continuing in the area for the second day as angry residents pelted stones on the policemen posted in Kralpora area, Srinivas said. He said the civil administration and police officials were making efforts to persuade the protestors to maintain peace.

Bullet-ridden body of Mir was recovered from Rawatpora forest on Friday, leading to massive protest demonstrations as local residents accused the Army of killing him in custody.

However, a Defence spokesman said that preliminary reports revealed that Mir was stopped by security personnel manning a picket at Chowkibal to ascertain his identity.

Bollywood star Dutt could head to jail Monday

20-oct-2007.

MUMBAI - Bollywood bad boy Sanjay Dutt, who is out on bail from a six-year sentence for illegal arms possession due to a technicality, could be back in jail as early as Monday, his lawyer said.

India’s Supreme Court agreed to his conditional release in August after the anti-terror court in Mumbai that jailed him failed to provide the actor with a copy of its judgement.

“Dutt has now been called on Monday and is likely to receive his copy,” Farhana Shah, one of Dutt’s lawyers, told AFP on Saturday.

The son of a politically prominent Hindu father and a Muslim mother honoured for her acting, Dutt’s turbulent off-screen life has also been wracked by drug abuse and two failed marriages.

Mobile Handset Users Unsatisfied

India Mobile Handset Usage and Satisfaction Study 2007 conducted by IDC indicates that the contentment score of mobile handset users in India, has fallen down for the first time in last three years.

Sony Ericsson’s owners are most satisfied with the performances of their phones. Motorola is on the second position and Nokia on third.
Last year Nokia was on the second rank and Motorola on third. Study also has shown that Motorola is the most improved brand.

According IDC’s report all other brands except Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola are below average.

Easier operations, longer life and better voice clarity are the reasons of higher customer satisfaction, while users are un-satisfied with internal memory and entertainment.

“The mobile handsets with higher memory and good entertainment features are still priced quite high.
The entry-level phones are relatively poor on these parameters contributing to decline in satisfaction scores,” said Kapil Dev Singh, country manager, IDC India.

The study also points out that integrated digital camera, music player and stereo FM radio are the features, which lead users to upgrade their mobile phone.
Even speakerphone is one of the features that users look for while upgrading their phones. On the other hand MMS feature is a failure because of to high cost of transmission.

Also IDC says that an average Indian mobile phone user talks for 56 minutes on the phone daily, whereas he/she receives 10 SMS’ ever day and sends 8.

“The overall increased usage of SMS can be attributed to reasonable tariff charges and widespread usage of SMS by TV shows, public opinion polls etc.,
which has been continuously increasing year-on-year,” said Shailendra Gupta, senior manager, consumer research, IDC India.

The India Mobile Handset Usage and Satisfaction Study 2007 survey was conducted on a sample of 4,760 mobile phone users, which includes both GSM and CDMA located in four metros and other 14 cities.

SBI Cards says it's beyond RTI ambit

NEW DELHI:
SBI Cards, a joint venture between the nationalised State Bank of India and a private company has approached the Delhi High Court contending it is a private entity and does not fall within the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The verdict in this case will decide whether a business scheme launched by a public sector bank — such as credit cards, home loans and other services — with a private company would be a private or a public entity.

On a petition by SBI Cards & Payment Services (SBI Cards), Justice S. Ravinder Bhatt of Delhi High Court last week issued notices to the Central Information Commission (CIC), besides the RBI and two SBI Cards customers. The petitioner had approached the high court challenging a recent ruling of the CIC.

SBI Cards is a joint venture between SBI, India’s largest nationalised bank, and GE Capital. Admitting the appeal, the high court bench suspended the CIC order asking SBI Cards to provide requisite information to its customers Arun Kumar Verma and Dileep Ayachit under the RTI Act. The bench suspended the CIC order saying that “the whole matter needs to be closely examined”.

The bench fixed November 23 for the next hearing of the case. In its July ruling on an appeal by two SBI Cards subscribers, the CIC held, “SBI Cards is a ‘public authority’ and hence customers can seek any information about the entity under the RTI Act.” At that time, the RBI had taken the stand that SBI Cards and Payment Services cannot be treated as a public authority and hence cannot give any information.

Rejecting the contentions of the RBI and SBI Cards, information commissioner Padma Balasubramanian had grilled the government bank, asking: “Why does SBI Cards use the SBI’s logo in promotional activities in case it’s a private company?” During the adjudication of appeals by information seekers, the CIC had also asked the RBI “to elaborate how SBI Cards cannot be treated as public authority by applying all the parameters laid down in the RTI Act”. The CIC had delivered its ruling on the appeal by Verma and Ayachit.

Cheques issued by them within the stipulated deadline in favour of SBI Cards were not encashed by the latter. Yet SBI Cards subsequently levied late payment charges and interest on them.

Upset by SBI Cards’ “high-handed and dishonest” behaviour akin to other private banking companies in the credit card business, Verma and Ayachit approached SBI Cards seeking information from them in October 2006 under the RTI Act, but SBI Cards rudely showed them the door saying it was not a public entity and was beyond the ambit of the RTI Act. It was against this refusal that the two had approached the CIC.

Teachers can't use mobile phones in classrooms: TN Minister

Chennai :
The Tamil Nadu Government's ban on the usage of mobile phones by students in schools, would soon be extended to teachers, who would not be allowed to use the gadget inside the classrooms.

The School Education Directorate has issued a circular asking teachers not to use mobile phones inside classrooms or while taking classes, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu told PTI on Thursday.

"They may either keep their phones in the office rooms while going to classes or even put them on silent mode, but can in no way use the mobile phones inside the classroom," he said.

The directorate, which was conducting surprise visits to schools to check whether students were using mobile phones, would keep an eye on teachers also, Thennarasu said.

"However, teachers are more refined than students and we are confident they will follow the code, leaving no place for surprise checks. But, such checks cannot be ruled out," he said.

India beat Australia by 2 wickets in final ODI

MUMBAI, October 17:
India pulled off an incredible two-wicket victory relying on the tail-enders to salvage some pride in the seventh and final cricket One-dayer against Australia here on Wednesday night.

In a low-scoring thriller, India first bundled out Australia for a paltry 193 in 41.3 overs, riding on Murali Kartik's career-best six for 27 and then staged a dramatic recovery to overhaul the target with four overs to spare and reduce the margin to 4-2 in the series.

The Indians owed their remarkable victory to left-arm spinner Kartik, who produced a mesmerising spell to derail the Australian batting and then was involved in a cheeky 52-run unbeaten partnership with Zaheer Khan (31 not out) to guide the team home.

Scorecard The Australians, who have already wrapped up the series, had the Indians tottering at 64 for 6 and it seemed only a matter of time for the inevitable but the game took a dramatic turn with Robin Uthappa (47) leading the recovery.

Kartik's career-best haul and unbeaten 21 runs earned him the Man of the Match award. The seventh wicket pair added 65 runs in 13.1 overs to take the score past the 100-run mark.

After Uthappa was out at 129 and Harbhajan Singh (19) on 143, Zaheer and Kartik kept the home team in the hunt and finally steered them home with an unbroken half century stand for the ninth wicket.

The determined fight-back by the lower order batsmen came after the Australian bowlers had cut a swathe through the jittery top-order.

The cheap dismissals of Sourav Ganguly and Dinesh Karthik, who replaced the out-of-form Rahul Dravid in the eleven, for ducks within the first four overs by Mitchell Johnson set the tone for yet another batting collapse.

Both Ganguly and Kartik perished by edging Johnson behind the wicket to Adam Gilchrist who then pouched Yuvraj Singh (15) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (5) off the other left-arm swing bowler Nathan Bracken to complete his 400th victim in ODIs. In between, Sachin Tendulkar (21) perished dragging Brett Lee on to his stumps, leaving half the side back in the dressing room with only the 18th over in progress for 63.

Irfan Pathan followed a run later edging to the slip cordon off James Hopes before Uthappa and Harbhajan showed defiance to take the total past the 100-mark and keep the packed gathering in good cheer. However, once it was broken by left arm slow bowler Michael Clarke, who trapped Uthappa with an arm ball at 129, the end looked near and the match swung further the Aussies' way when Harbhajan was sent back by Johnson.

But Zaheer and Murali Kartik had other ideas as they guided India to a thrilling victory. The meek capitulation by the top order nearly laid to waste a superb spell of slow bowling by Kartik who destroyed the high-flying Australian batting with magical figures of 6 for 27, during which he was on a hat-trick twice.

Kartik, who grabbed two wickets off successive balls on two occasions, sent the visitors to their doom in the dead-rubber tie to bring back memories of a similar display against the same opposition in a similar series-winning Test contest almost three years ago. Australia, choosing to bat first on winning the toss, were shot out in only 41.3 overs with 31-year-old Kartik grabbing his first-ever haul of more than three wickets in 33 ODIs, bettering his previous best of 3 for 36 against the West Indies at Jodhpur in November, 2002.

The Railways cricketer, recalled to the squad midway through the series at the insistence of captain Dhoni, removed Brad Hodge (16) and Andrew Symonds (0) off successive balls in the last two balls of his second over to bring the Australians down a bit.

After being denied a hat-trick in the first ball of his third over, Kartik struck three big blows in his eighth over, off the first, fourth and fifth balls, to get rid off Brad Haddin (19), Brad Hogg and Lee, both for ducks, to leave the tourists gasping at 162 for eight in the 32nd over.

Haddin was trapped leg before with an arm ball while Hogg and Lee were caught in the close-in cordon defending sharply spinning deliveries. He added the wicket of James Hopes (22), who was bowled through the gate going back, with his penultimate ball. Kartik, denied a hat-trick for the second time too, claimed his first two wickets to reduce Australia to 117 for four at the end of the three power plays.

Australia were a sorry-reading 177 for nine when he ended his spell, but recovered a bit through a 16-run last-wicket stand between Mitchell Johnson (24 not out) and last man Nathan Bracken before R P Singh dismissed the latter and terminated the innings.

Kartik made the ball spin and turn on a pitch affording good bounce, but his comrade-at-arms in the famous Test victory and capturer of five wickets then, Harbhajan Singh, was a bit unlucky to see Haddin grassed off a skier by Zaheer Khan at wide mid wicket. Aussie captain Ricky Ponting played the lone ranger with authority in making 57 with nine fours while the others fell like a pack of cards.

Sex daily improves male fertility: Study

Melbourne:
If men think that limiting sex will improve their sperm count, they are completely on the wrong side. If scientists are to be trusted, everyday sex will perk up their fertility.

A new research by Australian researchers, regular sex not only boosts male sperm quality but also helps those who suffer fertility problems to improve their chances of fatherhood.

Lead researcher Dr. David Greening of Sydney said, “Ejaculating more frequently, that is daily, improves sperm DNA damage in most men by a decent amount.

Prior to in vitro fertilisation (IVF), for example, men are abstaining a lot more than normal and perhaps sperm DNA increases more than usual.”

“Men think if they abstain for longer times before, say, ovulation that their sperm will be better. There may be more volume and numbers but DNA damage may increase,” Mr. David added.

Actually, the scientists came to the decision after cautiously examining the sperm quality of about 42 men whose mates had either failed to get pregnant through with IVF or had repeatedly miscarried.

The group discovered that when those men had no sexual activity continue for three days, their sperm contained high levels of DNA damage. When tested another time after having sex every day for a week, the quantity of damage cut down by a third.

“Among those men whose fertility problems stem from genetic damage to their sperm rather than a low sperm count, abstaining from sex makes their difficulties worse,” Greening observed.
The results have been presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s annual conference in Washington.

Brain sees fear faster than smile

CHICAGO:
Smiles may take a while, but a horrified expression is a sure-fire attention getter, US researchers said on Sunday, based on a study of how fast people process facial expressions.

They believe fearful facial expressions make a beeline to the alarm center of the brain known as the amygdala, cuing humans to potential threats.

"We think what is happening with fear is that this is a critical threat signal for us," said David Zald, associate professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

"Fear tells you something is wrong and you need to pay attention," Zald said. To find out which images get the brain's attention first, Zald, graduate student Eunice Yang and colleagues used a technique called visual flash suppression that slows down the brain's responses to facial expressions — which typically register in less than 40 milliseconds.

The researchers had people look into a special viewer that allowed each eye to see different images at the same time. "If you present different images to the two eyes, usually you will only perceive one of them at a time," Zald explained.

The image that registers with the brain typically depends on which eye is dominant for that person. "But if one of the eyes is presented by a dynamic, changing stimulus, it will basically suppress perception from the other eye," he said. Using this approach, they showed people a static image of a face in one eye and a series of rapidly presented, random images in another, creating a type of visual "noise".

How to avoid breast cancer

Tuesday October 16 2007 .

This is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and thousands of women are diagnosed with the disease each year. But there are 10 simple lifestyle changes that can help you stay healthy, as Jeremy Laurance explains

1. DRINK LESS
It may be unpopular, but it works. Every alcoholic drink a woman consumes on a daily basis increases her risk of breast cancer by six per cent. Drinking has been rising, especially among young women, and researchers in the UK estimate that it accounts for 2,000 cases out of the 40,000-plus diagnosed there every year.

Cutting down on drinking could be a wise move for the 18 per cent of young women aged 16 to 24 who consume more than three drinks a day.
But going teetotal may be a step too far. Moderate drinking is good for the heart, especially in middle age, and this could outweigh the higher risk of cancer. The dull but true reality is that moderate drinking is best for all-round health.

2. EAT FRUIT
You can't go wrong with this — almost all dietary advice comes down to the single instruction to eat more fruit and veg.

Diet is thought to be a key factor in one in four cancer deaths – and animal fat in the diet is the suspect ingredient in breast cancer.

The Japanese, who eat a diet of fish, rice and vegetables that is extremely low in animal fat, also have low rates of breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the blood, which encourages the growth of cancer cells. In populations with a high-fat diet, women tend to start their periods earlier and reach menopause later so they are exposed to high levels of oestrogen for longer, increasing their risk of breast cancer.

Studies into what effect eating fruit and vegetables has on breast cancer have produced mixed results. One study found that, when combined with taking exercise, the results were dramatic. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology last June, it showed that women who ate their five portions a day and walked briskly for at least 30 minutes halved their risk of breast cancer.

3. WALK
It is enjoyable, simple and requires no equipment. Walking is good for all aspects of physical and mental health –and cancer is no exception. Brisk walking (or other exercise) for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, is all that's needed. Currently only one in four women manages this. If all women did, Cancer Research UK estimates it would prevent 1,400 cases a year.

Three large studies in Italy and the US showed that inactivity caused 11 per cent of cases of breast cancer. Exercise works best before the menopause, but it is effective afterwards, too.

It is thought to alter oestrogen metabolism, resulting in a weaker version being made. For full cardiovascular fitness, though, note that experts in Britain last week said walking wasn’t enough – more energetic exercise was needed (see “Keep on running” on page 31).

4. AVOID HRT
Hormone replacement therapy is seen as the principal avoidable risk for breast cancer. Tens of thousands of women will have developed breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (of the lining of the womb) as a result.

Overall, women currently taking HRT are 63 per cent more likely to develop these three cancers than those who are not. Earlier hopes that these risks would be counterbalanced by a reduction in heart disease have not been borne out.

Gynaecologists recommend that women who wish to use it to ease the symptoms of the menopause do so for as short a time as possible.

5. GET SCREENED
Women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest possible stage have a nine in 10 chance of a successful recovery.

This is the rationale for screening — to detect a tumour by mammography when it is still too small to feel.

However, there is a downside in the shape of false alarms. Screening picks up abnormalities in the breast that look like cancer but turn out not to be.

Many women each year suffer the anxiety and discomfort of being recalled for further tests and undergoing biopsies of the breast to check for cancer – before being given the all-clear.

Screening is now more accurate, because two views of the breast are taken, reducing the chances of cancers being missed.

6. GIVE BIRTH
Having children, especially before the age of 30, helps protect against breast cancer.
It is down to those hormones, again. Over the last century, economic progress has led to delayed childbirth and smaller families as women with their own careers have sought to balance the demands of work and home.

But researchers estimate that delaying childbearing increases the risk of breast cancer by 3 per cent for each year of delay.

7. BREAST-FEED
Breast-feeding protects against breast cancer, as well as being best for the baby. But smaller families and the rise in the number of working mothers has meant the time spent breast-feeding has reduced.

Breast-feeding for six months reduces the risk, experts say. Yet many women never get that far. In England, 77 per cent of mothers start breast-feeding but more than a third switch to bottle-feeding in the first six weeks.

8. LOSE WEIGHT
Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer – but only after the menopause.

A large European study called Epic found postmenopausal women who were obese had a 31 per cent higher risk of breast cancer than women with a healthy weight. Reducing obesity could save 1,800 cases of breast cancer a year.

Obesity increases the risk of other cancers including those of the bowel, womb, kidney and oesophagus. Overall it is estimated that 5 per cent of cancers in women and 3 per cent in men are due to being obese or overweight.

For example, in the UK, 12,000 people might avoid getting cancer each year if they maintained a healthy body weight.

9. GET A STRESSFUL JOB (REALLY)
A 2005 Danish study published in the British Medical Journal found high levels of daily stress reduced the risk of the disease by 40 per cent.

The researchers suggest that stress may be beneficial by reducing levels of oestrogen. They draw a distinction between stress of the sort experienced by women in high-pressure jobs and stressful life events such as bereavement, which have previously been linked with an increase in cancer.

Stress can have other damaging effects, too – on the heart, and by increasing behaviour, such as drinking.

10. LIVE SOMEWHERE CLEAN
It has long been claimed that exposure to pollutants used in the manufacture of products from plastics to cosmetics has an “endocrine disrupting” effect.

The chemicals are said to mimic the action of oestrogen and have been blamed for feminised fish and frogs and declining sperm counts in men.

A report from the World Wide Fund for Nature last year claimed their role in breast cancer had been neglected.

It pointed out that less than half of new breast cancer cases can be explained by genetic and lifestyle factors and chemicals in the environment could be the missing link.

Other studies have contradicted this and experts point out that compared with the natural levels of oestrogen in a woman's blood, the level of the chemicals is too small to have significant impact. Still, moving to an unpolluted region could encourage other beneficial changes, such as eating healthily, exercising and drinking less.

The cost of India's nuclear U-turn

NEW DELHI:
A day after India formally conveyed to the US ‘difficulties’ in continuing with the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, a disappointed US was left hoping that India would continue efforts to push through the deal.

The US was clearly taken aback by the government’s sudden turnaround on the deal with US ambassador to India Davic C Mulford frantically making rounds to South Block to understand how things went so wrong for the nuclear deal.

The ambassador met with joint secretary (Americas) Gayatri I Kumar and in the last couple of days has met with external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon. The speed of the government’s turnaround on the nuclear deal has shocked the US which was confident of pushing the deal through at different levels.

A US official had earlier indicated that they were confident that the Congress government would be able to find a way out of the Communist roadblock. With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh conveying the existing difficulties to US president George Bush, the US was left with little to say on Tuesday.

The US state department merely said that it was up to the Indian government to sort out internal issues and hoped that India would continue efforts to conclude the agreement ``in a time that is appropriate for both sides’’. ``... it’s up to the government of India to talk about their efforts. Again, I think we’re going to continue to work on our part and we assume they’re going to continue to work on theirs and it’ll be done in a time that is appropriate for both sides,’’ deputy spokesman Tom Casey was quoted as saying.

“We believe this is an important arrangement. I think it will be good for both sides, once it’s implemented. And in terms of the timing and the process internally in India, I’ll just defer to the Indians on it,” the official said. Calling the deal good for non-proliferation efforts, the spokesperson further said: ``On our side, we would of course need to work out an appropriate arrangement with the Nuclear Suppliers Group. And certainly we want to see that get accomplished.

But again in terms of the timing and the discussions internally within the Indian political system, I’ll leave that to them.’’ Mr Singh told Mr Bush in a telephonic conversation that ``certain difficulties have arisen with respect to the operationalisation of the India – US civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

’’ Analysts here say that that the failure of the government to push through the deal would have an adverse impact on Indo-US ties and would erode India’s credibility on the global stage.

Study finds that people are programmed to love chocolate

WASHINGTON: For the first time, scientists have linked the all-too-human preference for a food — chocolate — to a specific, chemical signature that may be programmed into the metabolic system and is detectable by laboratory tests. The signature reads ‘chocolate lover’ in some people and indifference to the popular sweet in others, the researchers say.

The study, according to a press relesase by EurekAlert, by Swiss and British scientists breaks new ground in a rapidly emerging field that may eventually classify individuals on the basis of their metabolic type, or metabotype, which can ultimately be used to design healthier diets that are customized to an individual’s needs.

The study is scheduled for publication in the Nov. 2 issue of American Chemical Society’s Journal of Proteome Research, a monthly publication.

Sunil Kochhar and colleagues studied 11 volunteers who classified themselves as ‘chocolate desiring’ and 11 volunteers who were ‘chocolate indifferent.’ In a controlled clinical study, each subject — all men — ate chocolate or placebo over a five day period while their blood and urine samples were analyzed.

The ‘chocolate lovers’ had a hallmark metabolic profile that involved low levels of LDL-cholesterol (so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol) and marginally elevated levels of albumin, a beneficial protein, the scientists say.

The chocolate lovers expressed this profile even when they ate no chocolate, the researchers note. The activity of the gut microbes in the chocolate lovers was also distinctively different from the other subjects, they add.

“Our study shows that food preferences, including chocolate, might be programmed or imprinted into our metabolic system in such a way that the body becomes attuned to a particular diet,” says Kochhar, a scientist with Nestlé Research Center in Switzerland.

“We know that some people can eat a diet that is high in steak and carbs and generally remain healthy, while the same food in others is unhealthy,” he explains. “Knowing one’s metabolic profile could open-the-door to dietary or nutritional interventions that are customized to your type so that your metabolism can be nudged to a healthier status.”

Researchers have known for some time that metabolic status and food preferences can vary from person to person and even between different cultures.

The recent growth of the new field of proteome research, which focuses on characterizing the structure and function of the complete set of proteins produced by our genes, has allowed scientists to gain a deeper understanding of the metabolic changes that occur when foods are digested, Kochhar says.

“There’s a lot of information in metabolism that can be used to improve health and this information is just now being explored and tapped,” the researcher says.

In the future, a test for determining one’s metabolic type could be performed as part of a blood or urine test during a regular visit to the doctor, Kochhar predicts. But a reliable test to measure one’s metabolic type may be five years away, as more research is still needed in this area, he notes.

Women were not included in the current study in order to avoid any metabolic variations linked to the menstrual cycle, which has been shown in studies by others to influence metabolic differences, Kochhar says. But the researchers plan to include women in future clinical trials on metabolic responses to chocolate to determine if there is a gender-specific response to the treat.

In addition to providing a better understanding of individual metabolic types, the current study could also lead to the discovery of additional biomarkers that can identify new health benefits linked to chocolate and other foods, says Kochhar, whose research was funded by Nestlé.

Coming soon: YouTube’s India site

India’s contribution to YouTube’s global traffic is less than one per cent but that is not stopping the Google-owned video-sharing service to launch an India-specific website, according to a top YouTube executive.

“We plan to launch YouTube India anytime between January and March 2008,” said Shashi Seth, head of monetisation at the San Bruno, California-based YouTube. He spoke exclusively to Hindustan Times during his visit to India earlier this week.

YouTube India will aggregate Indian video content – specifically movie trailers, music videos, independent films and television content. “YouTube.com has over 300,000 videos being uploaded every day,” Seth said. “Indian content obviously gets lost in this sea of videos.

A YouTube.in site will help Indian surfers to get what they want. It will also be an excellent platform for young filmmakers to launch their work. All they have to do is create a channel to drive traffic to their videos.”YouTube has already tied up with Eros Entertainment, a film production and distribution firm, to showcase its new releases, DVDs and other merchandise.

“This is just the beginning,” Seth said. “Together with Google’s sales teams, YouTube’s India executives will scour the country for television content, music videos and also work with producers to make their products available for viewing.

”The possibilities are endless, especially for television production houses, according to Seth. “Television viewing in India is limited to just television, even though it is extremely vibrant. With YouTube, television production houses can internationalise their copyright content, even monetise it.

Our advertising service will throw up region and topic-specific overlay ads on videos. This revenue will be shared with the copyright holder.” YouTube charges $20 per for every 1,000 impressions internationally, but may have separate pricing for India.

Seth feels that with the rise of broadband penetration in India and viewership from India rising (a Rajinikanth video was recently ranked in the top 100 YouTube videos of all time), this is the right time to enter the market.

“One of the key challenges will be to comply with the local laws in India, and we are making sure that our service does not violate any legal prerequisites,” Seth said.

Renegotiate K-G deal: HC to Ambanis

Mumbai October 16, 2007
The Bombay High Court has directed the Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries (RIL) and Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Natural Resources (RNRL) to go back to the negotiating table and sign a fresh gas supply contract within 120 days, giving a new twist to the two-year-long dispute between RIL and RNRL over supply of gas from the Krishna-Godavari (K-G) basin off the Andhra Pradesh coast.

RNRL approached the court last year asking it to direct RIL to honour the agreement to supply gas to it at $2.34 per million British thermal unit.

The single bench of Justice Anup Mohta also said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani as part of the family settlement were binding on the individuals and the respective group companies.

Asking the parties to work out a fresh ?bankable and commercially acceptable? Gas Supply Master Agreement (GSMA) in accordance with the family arrangement between the Ambani brothers the court ruled that the GSMA of January 2006 was in breach of the Scheme of Demerger.

During the hearing, RNRL counsel Mukul Rohtagi argued that the GSMA deviated from the family settlement understanding and was signed by RIL on behalf of both parties since the management control of RNRL had not been transferred to the Anil Ambani group when it was signed. Harish Salve appeared on RIL's behalf.

The single bench also maintained the status quo on its earlier interim order that locks all 80 million standard cubic metres per day of gas (mscmd) to be produced from RIL's fields in the KG-basin with RNRL, NTPC and with RIL itself for captive use.

The judgement is expected to pave the way for both the parties to discuss and settle issues like the liability provision, quantity and tenure of gas supply. It was not immediately clear which party will initiate the discussions.

Both have the option of approaching the division bench or moving the Supreme Court.

Anand 'touched' by Delhi reception

New Delhi :
World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand on Monday said he was "touched" by the enthusiasm shown by his fans who received him at the airport on his first home coming a fortnight after winning the crown in Mexico.

The World Champion had no complains at all about the unruly scenes even as the organisers, one of the top IT education companies of the country for whom the Anand is a brand ambassador, failed to control the situation.

"I was touched by seeing the boisterous crowd. It felt very special that everyone came to airport for me at one am," Anand told PTI later in the day.

The waiting posse of photographers and cameramen almost climbed over each other to get a shot of the champion which didn't amuse Anand, who quickly made his exit.

Asked if he felt any discomfort as he came out among the crowd waiting for him, Anand said he was "moved" and described people's behaviour as "enthusiastic".

"I was just moved. It was an enthusiastic crowd," he insisted.

This is Anand's first visit to India after becoming the undisputed world champion last month and he has busy schedule, including meeting President Pratibha Patil.

Anand, who leaves for Chennai on Wednesday, will be formally felicitated by the All India Chess Federation in his home city.

His wife Aruna said it was very overwhelming the way Anand was hailed in Mexico immediately after he won the last round game and now here.

"There the audiences immediately started making 'Mexican wave' when Anand won the last round. Here also it was very nice," he said.

Anand agreed that being the World Champion would mean he was a brand ambassador of the game and would certainly promote chess.

"It is really important to promote the sport when so many sports are vying for attention," he said and added that he would be making it possible through "NIIT's mindgames programme which has around 5000 children following chess at various levels".

Anand said becoming the first Asian to win the world champion in the sport dominated by Europe would give impetus to ongoing process in the country.

"We are already ahead of many European countries and the movement which has already started in India will get a boost because of this feat of mine," he said.

Airtel Offers 8 Mbps Broadband in India

Airtel has become the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) to provide 8 Mbps broadband to India. Currently, the speeds on offer range from 256 Kbps to 4 Mbps. Launching the service, Atul Bindal, president (Broadband & Telephone Services) of Bharti Airtel, said that with 8 Mbps speed, their network would be "Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) ready".

Higher speeds like the 8 Mbps broadband mean easier heavy-file downloading, smoother online gaming, etc. Further, users can browse simultaneously on multiple windows without much performance compromise. Streaming video viewers would no longer have to wait for a video to buffer before it plays.

Users will be able to download a 5 MB music file in 5 seconds flat as compared to 160 seconds on a 256 kbps connection.

Airtel's 8 Mbps broadband service will initially be available in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Delhi, and the NCR, with a subsequent rollout in Mumbai and Hyderabad in a few weeks.

Airtel has invested in the back end infrastructure to deliver these speeds. It already has a Carrier Ethernet Network (CEN) operational in Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai. In the next phase, Mumbai too would be upgraded to a CEN.

CEN allows not only provisioning of high speed plans to broadband customers but also delivery of triple play services. In the other cities, the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) network has been upgraded to deliver 4 and 8 Mbps speeds.

On the content front Airtel has tied up with content providers like India Games and Soundbuzz to provide unlimited gaming, music downloads, education, and communication services. Airtel offers NetXpert, what it calls India's first automated broadband self-care technology, and PC Secure, which offers an anti-virus and parental control.

On the tariff front, the company has duration-based plans for beginners to unlimited plans for the heavy downloader.

New telecom licensing nears reality

The new licensing and M&A policy for the telecom sector is closer to reality now. The Telecom Commission is learnt to have finalised the new licensing norms for the sector two days ago, and on Friday, it put up the issue before communications minister A Raja. Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary DS Mathur, who chairs the Telecom Commission, along with other members of the panel, had a long meeting with Raja on Friday on the proposed licensing policy.

Raja, who flew off to Chennai after the meeting in the capital, has indicated his views on the new regime. But officials in DoT refused to divulge any details. Now, the ball is in the minister's court, sources said.

Although the minister's nod will decide the content of the licensing policy, the Telecom Commission is of the view that of the 575 applications submitted by over 30 companies to the DoT recently, only one or two new players for pan-India licences (22 licences each) could be entertained for spectrum allocation.

"It is no secret that spectrum is a scarce resource," sources said

However, the new policy will not impose any cap on the number of operators in any telecom circle, in sync with the recent recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The Commission has also ruled out auction of licence or spectrum for 2G services, thereby indicating that the current subscriber-based criteria for spectrum allocation would continue. But a source in DoT pointed out that, "Subscriber base calculation for allocation of spectrum is the most contentious issue in the licensing policy." TRAI had recently recommended increasing the subscriber base criteria for 2G spectrum allocation.

Among other things, the Telecom Commission is learnt to have gone ahead with the existing crossover limit of 10 per cent. That is, when a company has stake in two service providers in the same circle, it must limit its equity in one of them at less than 10 per cent. TRAI had suggested that the cross-holding limit must be raised to 20 per cent, but it has not been accepted by the Telecom Commission.

On the combined market share (subscriber base of the players) for a merged entity, the Telecom Commission has accepted the TRAI recommendation to bring down the level from 67 per cent to 40 per cent, sources said. However, some mobile operators, especially in GSM, are arguing that 40 per cent is too low a limit.

The Telecom Commission has also cleared use of dual technology under the same licence, with an entry fee of Rs 1,680 crore (for pan India licences).

In addition, stringent conditions including restrictive provisions for exit of players have been built into the licensing policy, in order to weed out non-serious players.

Vodafone will await court order on tax claim

New Delhi: Vodafone's Indian-born chief executive Arun Sarin said Monday his company would await the court verdict on the $1.7 billion claim by the tax department for buying Hutchison's stake in a joint venture with the Essars.

We will wait for the court's decision," Sarin told reporters here after he met Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. He maintained that the particular matter was not discussed.
The Bombay High Court is hearing the matter.

The income tax department had sent a notice to Vodafone and sought $1.7 billion as capital gains tax related with the purchase of Hong Kong-based Hutchison's stake in the Hutch-Essar mobile phone venture.

The finance ministry made the claim saying it was for Vodafone to retain the tax liability from the amount payable to Hutchison, which should then have been deposited with the government.

Sarin contends that in such cases it is the seller Hutchison that should be liable for the capital gains taxes and not the Ruias of the Essar Group, nor Vodafone, nor their combined entity.
Vodafone had paid some $11.1 billion for the controlling stake in Hutch-Essar.

Meanwhile, Vodafone announced that it has set up a foundation in India with an investment of $10 million to strengthen its presence in the country and to fund social development programmes.

"It will initially focus on projects that are associated with providing education to youths across the country and enabling development of higher skill-sets," said Sarin, who will be its founder-chairman.

Funds will be given to local and global non-government organisations that take up socially relevant projects and objectives.

Sarin also said that his group's capital expenditure in India had doubled since the entry into the country. "We are now spending $2 billion a year. We want to quickly grow our customer base."

Halo Games Maker to Be Independent of Microsoft

Published: October 6, 2007

Microsoft said yesterday that it was giving up its controlling ownership of Bungie Software, the video game subsidiary that developed the hugely popular Halo franchise, including its latest iteration, Halo 3.

Bungie, based in Kirkland, Wash., said it planned to return to its roots as an independent game studio, a move that eventually will cost Microsoft exclusive ties to one of the most successful and sought-after teams of game developers.

Harold Ryan, president and studio head of Bungie, said that he had been working for months on a plan to separate the studio from Microsoft, based in nearby Redmond, Wash. Mr. Ryan said that the companies had a good working relationship, but that developers at Bungie yearned to work for themselves, not a corporate owner.

Neither Mr. Ryan, nor Shane Kim, the head of Microsoft’s game studios, would discuss the financial terms. Microsoft originally acquired Bungie in 2000 for an undisclosed amount.
Bungie’s Halo games have been of singular significance to Microsoft in the development of its video game machine business.

Halo has been available exclusively on Microsoft’s Xbox video game consoles. That has meant the game’s popularity has helped drive consumers to the Xbox consoles rather than to competing systems made by Nintendo and Sony.

Microsoft said that since Halo 3 hit the market last week, it had rung up more than $300 million in sales. It has been selling at a faster pace than Halo and Halo 2, which combined sold nearly 15 million copies, Microsoft has said.

Mr. Kim said the separation furthered Microsoft’s aim of getting blockbuster hits for its consoles. “It was in our best interest to support Bungie’s desire to return to its independent roots,” he said.

At least initially, important aspects of the relationship between Microsoft and Bungie will remain intact.
Mr. Ryan said that Bungie planned to continue to develop games exclusively for the Xbox platform. He said that at some point, Bungie would have the right to develop games for other platforms, but he declined to say when.

Bungie has 113 employees. Evan Wilson, a video game industry analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, said that leading employees of Bungie had bought out majority ownership from Microsoft. “Bungie and Microsoft clearly had different creative directions,” Mr. Wilson said.
He added, “Bungie lost some key employees over the years, which while not uncommon for studios, may be an indication of that.”

“It’s an emotionally creative point of view,” he said of the decision to take the studio independent. “That’s the state we wanted to be in.”

Is it a Phone; is it Software?

All the speculation regarding a 'Google Phone' not withstanding, the company is not after all creating a rival to Apple's iPhone; rather a rival to Windows Mobile software -- if the latest reports are to be believed.

Which means Google is busy creating a software to compete with Microsoft's Windows Mobile, and not a gadget to compete with Apple's iPhone.

What's more, Google will most likely not charge phone makers any licensing fees for its software, unlike Microsoft. All said, if Google is indeed leading the creation of an open source competitor to Microsoft's Windows Mobile, it makes imminent sense, as Google has always been more about software than hardware.

BSNL Landlines Bundle Broadband

For every new landline connection installed across the country, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will offer a bundled Broadband connection at no additional cost, the company said. And, users will be able to activate the connection any time.

The bigger plan is that 99.9 percent of all new BSNL landlines will come with this facility, which will also be extended to rural areas of the country.

The next step would be to make all existing landline connections Internet-enabled. With the entire process likely to reach completion by this month end, all BSNL landline users will be able to log onto the Internet sans registering for Sancharnet connections.

The catch however is that speeds for these connections will be restricted to about 56 Mbps -- somewhat like dial-up connections -- and not like regular Broadband connections with speeds up to 256 Mbps.
